I went to the bowl game in charlotte when we played Virginia in the early 2000’s. We were getting killed and my dad wanted to leave in the 4th quarter. As we were walking out a fellow mountaineer fan yelled “what happened to thick or thin?”. My dad yelled back “the thins leaving!!” So I guess the true mountaineer fan is the one that stayed and watched us get killed in the 4th quarter.

Be a “true fan”. That term is thrown around -a lot- and yet no one can define what it means.
A true fan is someone that continues to support you whether you're 'hot' to the masses or not. They are always checking in to see what you are up to and even feel compelled to offer constructive criticism. In the business of being here today and gone tomorrow, people are lucky to have true fans.

URBAN DICTIONARY:
A term that describes a person's blind loyalty to a team individual, or product.
Man ,George thinks the teams Quarterback is one of the best in the league but statistically he's one of the worst. He's really, really, a true fan.

True Fan: a pretentious, often narcissistic fan who believes everyone should think and express the same viewpoints and opinions as themselves.

I was at the same bowl game, but I stayed to the bitter end.
I watched 50,000 WVU fans leave the 2005 Louisville game in Morgantown. I stayed to watch Pat White bring WVU from behind and beat Louisville as those fans that left turned around to run back in like a bunch of ants but didn't make it. They stood on law hill crying as they missed the historic event.

To me it means knowing we have played for a NC and believing it can happen again. It's believing in the new recruits until they give you reason not to.

It also means not putting preconceived limitations on any player based upon how long he's been in the system. Zach Frazier needed to develop a couple of years before he could play, right? Wrong, if they are talented enough to play and smart enough to learn the playbook you can play.

A true fan waits to see if a coach can succeed until he fails after a fair chance, not Texas style. A true fan has faith the coaches can find even a QB ready to play at a high level. NC QB Howell is the best QB the Tar Heels have ever had. He threw for 36 TDs in his first year as the starter as a true Freshman.

A true fan doesn't say we can never, they say why not us? A true WVU fan will praise a coach one minute and curse him the next. That's just who we are. JMHO

Its a marketing term used to target people to give additional money and support for a product without increasing the actual value of the product itself.
