Sanders and Cignetti aside, production over potential seems like a good strategy, past performance being the best predictor. Ignore the hype, ignore the star ratings, ignore the agents. What have you done on the field?

Recruiting “production over potential” from the lower mid-majors worked for Cignetti, but it ain’t gonna work for everyone.

There’s a reason those guys had to start out at smaller schools. Not that many are equipped to make the jump to the higher level. Cignetti has a special eye for identifying the few that are …but I doubt the same applies to Deion.

Some of the potential guys have bought into the hype of themselves so much they stop putting in the work. The other guys are great in a team setting and keep working hard at it.

I would much rather have guys that have already produced and make others better than a potential that feels entitled.

That said if you can get both, obviously you have found a star.
I think money has made the top talent soft, heck it would make me soft. Give me a few milliion and my production would fall off a CLIFF!

Cignetti also happens to be a GREAT coach as well which helps. You give a mediocre chef and the world’s greatest chef the same ingredients and the meal doesn’t come out the same.

Smart. I have some concerns when it comes to UK’s LBers and some DBs taken in the portal. While they appear to have potential, the LBers especially, are young and unproven. Athletic? Sure. But the MLB position is often the QB of the defense. I fear the lack of experience will hurt UK next season.

If Deion recruited straight from the NFL, he still couldn’t win. I can’t understand why he continues to garner support.
I'm with you I dont see the infatuation people have with him as a coach. Great player for sure as a coach not so much.

I agree that everyone is going to try and ride that train. Its take talent to spot the diamond in the rough type players and even more talent to develop them into high level athletes. Cignetti is a anomaly in my opinion and super hard to duplicate.

This doesn't seem to me to be the most optimal way to build and maintain a program. At least, it wouldn't for Kentucky in any way shape or form.

Special eye and recruits the guys that fit his system and style of coaching. It takes more than just finding productive guys for sure.
