So, I attended the UTEP vs. DePaul game last Saturday (as a UTEP fan) and got a good look at DePaul in person. Here are my thoughts.

UTEP plays a style of defense that attempts to force lots of turnovers. (UTEP is offensively challenged, similar to NU, but they have good athletes.) Early in the game, it was working, and UTEP built an 11-point lead in the first half. But DePaul adjusted, and they started making shots that they were missing earlier in the game. Overall, the first half was an even affair, but at the end of the half, DePaul banked in a half-court shot AND UTEP was called for a foul, so they got a 4-point play and lots of momentum going into the half. A 2-point lead at the half turned into a 6-point lead. And I guess that was a sign of things to come.

In the 2nd half, DePaul would not miss. They drained 3 after 3 and made a total of 14 for the game, shooting over 50% from beyond the arc. They just exploded. It reminded me of the Pitt game. They also hit 17 of 19 free throws, so we don't want to put them at the line. All five starters were in double-figures, and four of them shot at least 50% from beyond the arc. So, they showed balance on offense. UTEP's style of D did lead to some open looks, once DePaul adjusted and UTEP wasn't able to match them. But they were just on fire, hitting contested shots, too (like the ridiculous end to the first half).

On paper, this is a team that NU should be able to beat, but so was Pitt. The 'Cats can't afford to let these guys get open looks.

Don't sleep on DePaul.

Stats say DePaul has 3 guys who shoot 40%+ from beyond. They are not a big team. Our perimeter defense will be tested.

Saw them beat Loyola in similar fashion, hitting some very long 3s after a cold first half. Like a lot of teams, they have a bunch of transfers. They could win some games in the Big East this year which is not quite as strong with Villanova and Creighton falling back a bit.

We can defend the perimeter if we stop automatically doubling in the post.
It just seems like an obvious change of approach.
(Its possible we changed after the Pitt debacle)
Let somebody start scoring in the paint against Nicholson before we give him help defensively.
Hopefully Verhoeven is up to the task.

I'm not sure what to make of the DePaul matchup. It looks like they don't shoot nearly as well as Pitt (213 nationally in 2PT%, 277 in 3PT% vs. 139/156 for Pitt), but DePaul appears to have more scoring depth. I could see their bench doing some damage when Chase is being rested.

Duquesne just beat DePaul 66-55. DePaul got no closer than 8 in the 2nd half.
The Blue Demons started nobody taller than 6'7" (and that guy is a 185 lbs guard). Two 6'6" forwards, both right around 200 lbs.

Could be one of those games where Beran can play the 5, but on the other hand, maybe Verhoeven and Nicholson will score 20 points each.

I am a world class scholar on DePaul basketball after having watched and impressive 3/4 of a game against MN.

So I will give you all an overview of their team:

They are athletic.

In the Duquesne game, DePaul shot 38% from beyond the arc (and 45% in the second half), but only 26% from within the arc.

Their strength is definitely not inside. Our priority should be to guard the perimeter.

Should be an opportunity for Big Matt to show some offensive contributions, I would think.

That's a 1 game sample.

For the season
3pt% - 36.4%
2pt% - 47.5%

Still makes them more dangerous from 3, as that equates to 54.6% from 2, but the magnitude is not the same.

Anybody else stunned by this outcome compared to what they thought going in? Winning by 38?!?!

I know the Cats took advantage of 22 turnovers but they also committed 15.

Nice afternoon for the Cats.

Definitely surprised the margin was THAT wide but was still expecting us to win easily. DePaul is not good.
