With NIL and transfer portal, I’m not sure it’s possible to violate NCAA recruiting rules anymore. Hell if Kansas can go to the Final Four after the FBI sting, my concern is we’re not visibly cheating enough.

My concern would be finding enough players who want to play at NU. So far for next season we have one. I know it’s early but we could also lose more players to the portal.

I am 100% sure that the portal is being a source of shadiness that is out of control.

I am positive countless recruiters are telling kids to enter the portal and they will offer them. Not exactly just waiting to see a name and jumping on it.

But - as Bob says, these other small schools have coaches that work within limitations and systems and win games and make the tourney. Not every year, but more than once in a century. Will it work at NU? Maybe not - it's exactly the Carmody model, which eventually hit a ceiling. It did, however, work in football**, where Fitz gets "system" players that play team football and want to graduate. Some go to the NFL, some don't.
Notice no response? Because this breaks the complaint model. It demonstrates that programs can succeed when faced with limited options of players to recruit. It demonstrates that the right coach can overcome systemic limitations. Are they rare? Sure. But:

1. The existence gives justification to fire underperforming coaches in search of finding that unicorn - and -
2. NU claims to be a bright school. If they are so bright...figure it out.

It's either that we have not been that smart, or just the unluckiest bastards on the planet. Pound the rock.

Well, I dunno know about that - maybe slowest? BC raised the program. CCC raised it again. Both guys lingered around too long - way too long.

#2 is the crux of so many issues, globally, not just NU. We have these intractable problems such as crappy NU basketball or crappy inner-city schools. What are the solutions? I don't know, but I AM NOT PAID MILLIONS TO FIGURE IT OUT. Others are. They should figure it out, or get fired.

Not to get too political, but I wish we were giving someone millions of dollars to try and figure out how to fix the crappy inner-city schools and not to someone who coaches college basketball. Ah...... life.
