Does anyone have any advice on buying a diamond ring. My anniversary is approaching and I'm thinking of buying my wife an upgrade. I've looked at jewelry stores, and it appears that I can get a better product online for cheaper, but am a bit apprehensive to spend that kind of money ($5-$7k) online without someone giving me some validation of the source.

Forget about the ring. Go see this guy & he will set you up with a sweet jewel-encrusted, gold plated Furby pendant. YWIA

Look. I love my wife, and she knows it. But buying a 5-7K ring would be a turrible decision. Take a trip of a lifetime, upgrade your house, burn the money for heat, anything but a ring would be wiser.
I'm giving it to her on that "trip of a lifetime". I agree that diamonds aren't the best investment, but I've been married for 30 years and have the money, so why not make her happy?

Back when I was in college I got engaged and bought the ring off of Blue Nile. I went to Tiffany’s, saw a ring for 25k, and literally got the almost identical diamond and setting for like 6k. I’ve gotten lots of jewelry there since. Fantastic site and can’t recommend enough.

Blue Nile is where I'm looking online. Just skeptical of the online, wire me money and I'll send you the diamond. It is literally 35% cheaper though, for a nicer cut and clarity.

I can recommend these folks. They do a few things i really like. Their sales people are salaried professionals, they do not work on commission. I think they have 7 locations, mostly in Florida. The BBB shows a few issues which everyone will have, what I like is the response to the problems. I have purchased from the one in Savannah. You're going to get what you pay for. They are very different from the mall jewelry store experience. I think you would be pleased.

If I were a billionaire I wouldn't spend $5k on jewelry for me or anyone else. Actually for myself you could even take the k off. To me, jewelry and tattoos are the biggest wastes of money there is. I did used to wear a watch but that only served the function of letting me know what time it was.

What about nipple rings for your concubines, Glenn?

Buy from Sams or Costco. Never ever from one of those flimflam Jewelry chains or Department stores.

Give her the gift of "forever love" with the "always with you" collection of polished gravel set in gold plated particle board.

So she got her diamond tonight. She was pleased. I am now after a cigarette, and I don't even smoke. While I agree that diamonds are overpriced and stupid, Blue Nile online is the way to go if you are going to buy one. I did plenty of research and saved about $4000. @Kybluedude. I'll give you my Ireland agenda once it is completed. I had to give her the ring early because it has a 30 day return policy, and I wanted to make sure it fit and she didn't want to change anything.

OP, I bought a ring on estate sale site at Christmas time for wife. www.ebth.com

They are local to Cinci area but do ship. Ring cost $1k. It is 18k gold, 1.2 carat diamond and emerald (don't remember weight). Easily a $4-$5k ring.

Edit- just saw you already bought using my buddy Ron's site recommendation. Maybe try mine some other time.

Go get one of those fabricated diamonds that cost 1/10th the cost and apparently they are so close to being identical, that they need lasers to tell the difference.

The only bigger waste than the cost of a wedding is the cost of a ring.
That's what my wife buys and she receives lots of compliments on the rings.

Weddings are the bigger waste of money than a ring. They cost much more, and other than some pictures, you have nothing of it after. Just run off and get married. That's my plan for #2.
As for the ring, I know many years ago the rule-of-thumb was 1-months salary, which was a big amount to me at 24, but 30 years later whoa!!!!
But even for a "practical woman" are the lab-engineered diamonds considered good/acceptable?
Actually it would be good to see some female input in this thread.

Lab grown diamonds, synthetics, are just a cheaper substitute for the genuine article. Genuine diamonds that have been "graded" by GIA (the industry standard), as to the level of quality, will forever hold their value. Lab grown diamonds are simply a "visual" substitute for the genuine article, but the bottom line is that they're not authentic. JMO.

I bought my wife’s ring online from a brick and mortar store located in California back in 2019.

It wasn’t too hard to validate them since they have an actually shop and it wasn’t all online.

Obviously lots of research and I asked for many pictures of the ring. I also asked for the GIA report upfront before I bought it.

Why would your wife be “happier” with a more expensive rock on a gold band on her finger?

Never got that. I agree with the other guy, but some property or something. You’re basically throwing away 7K because society told you and her that’s what you should do and it’s important to acknowledge your love with money that you can physically show other people. But hey spend your money however you want.

Just not a jewelry person. Or a car person. I could have ten billion and I’d own one or two cars, truck and suv and would have zero gold chains. Those things just do nothing for me. I’d rather waste it on loose women and travel. Also, I own a home.

If you're married ... happy wife, happy life. The rest doesn't matter and the sooner you learn that the quicker you can get back to your golf game. 😁

So you decided a female runs your happiness? Sounds like an awful decision. Good luck with your impending divorce.

Naw ... been married to my lovely wife for over 40 years and very happy. All's good ... couldn't be better. You sound very angry, unhappy and lonely ... my condolences.

I frankly think this thread should be locked and binned. Regardless of one's stance on jewelry, the price points discussed herein are reprehensibly low for Le Paddocke.

lol nope. But happy for you.
So, if anyone cares, I bought my wife the ring she wanted. We went on a great vacation, and I couldn't care less if any of you have criticism of my spending decisions. I've been married for 30 years, have raised 2 happy successful children, and don't need anyone else to tell me that I am right. Thanks for everyone that responded to this thread.

Yeah, the sparkles only count if 8 year olds died harvesting them in service of billionaires who have a monopoly on them and create artificial scarcity so people can show off how much money they could afford to blow.
