Park View-Sterling, a school with 1,350 students, will not field a varsity football team this year. The program has posted just six wins the past six seasons. Current head coach is Josh Wild who put in one year at Washington & Lee in 2016. Also, as noted below, Charles City will not be fielding a team this year.

After somebody made a comment on a different board, I checked the demographics of Park View's students. It is 57% Hispanic, 20% White, 13% Asian, 6% Black, 3% 2 or more races. Briar Woods, on the other hand. is 61% White and 8% Hispanic.

Even little league football is falling apart, down at that level its all about coach Jimmy and lil Jimmy can run fast so he is gonna start at Rb, no other skill except he can run fast, plus its just a babysitting service for the coaches and then the parents complain if lil johnny doesn't get to play, (more then likely because he would get killed out there and hasn't developed yet) but mom and dad don't understand that or want to understand that

Very troubling, especially after TJ-Alexandria and King & Queen did so last year. At least we still have towns like Richlands, Salem, Tappahannock, and Altavista where you'd have to pry the football from their cold dead hands.

Citing 'lack of student participation,' Charles City High School cancels upcoming volleyball season too.

It's a shame with what has happened to the Charles City athletic program over the years. I remember a thread a few years ago where the school board was discussing getting rid of coaching stipends and cutting athletics - looks like they are on their way to getting their wish. What a shame.

VHSL mulls making changes to help football programs

The eight-man football wouldn’t be replacing 11-man football, but just give some schools another option if they’re having trouble fielding a team.

Haun said they will be sending out a survey to see how many schools might be interested in eight-man football as well as talking about it during the upcoming year at VHSL meetings.

“I think it’s a viable option,” Haun said of eight-man football. “Rather than a school just totally dropping their football program, I think it gives students an opportunity to participate in football for an eight-man versus no football. I think it’s an option that we need to look at, provide for our schools if there is enough desire out there to take a look at it.”
