Do current High School Coachs actually teach classes?

Back in my day, high school coaches doubled down as history, speech and science teachers. Some of them even drove the school bus. I just wondered if the head coaches of schools like Tulsa Union or Jenks actually teaches during the off season? If not, what do they do to earn there large salaries during the off season?

I would say a majority do, however most big schools in the DFW area allow the head coach to just coach. It's actually a big incentive to draw a new head coach to allow him to concentrate on football only.

Most head coaches dont teach, even some OC/DC dont teach at the big schools. All position coaches will teach something.

I was hoping you would respond to this coe. So, if they don't teach classes, drive the school bus, etc, what do they do during the off season? Recruit?

Head football coaches are usually also the athletic director or coordinator at the HS

you have to be big name at a big HS to not have to teach, but I've known this isn't odd in Texas where some HS spend more on facilities than small colleges.

long vacations? I don't know, but they shouldn't be paid for anything more than football, and what revenues football brings them. But we all know that isn't true,... they get money from our taxes.

Being the head guy has its perks. We do have 2 athletic periods throughtout the day. Freshman come in 4th period and the rest come in 8th period. Head guy is there while guys are working out in weight room and outside. Other than that, our head coach does monitor the lunchroom from time to time.

They don't do much K2C...


If they are the campus coordinator they have to be at all sporting events they can. I guess some have coaches meetings, but I'll bet most don't. I guess you can equate them to the athletics principal if you will...but without as many responsibilities.

I believe the vast majority of coaches are also teachers or have other duties within the school system.

In Texas, all coaches have to be certified teaches and have another job in the district. So there is no such thing as a volunteer coach. You must be employed as a teacher.

Pretty sure that the HFCs who only coach, also have administrative jobs, such as AD in smaller districts or campus AD for large schools.

I am certain that the asst coaches all have teaching jobs. Texas does not allow parents or locals with coaching experience, to help coach at any level, at least in public schools,

The privates are under different jurisdiction. Except Houston and Dallas Jesuit.

I have known a couple of retired coaches that came back to only coach as a part time job. This isn't common though

I am the defensive coordinator for a small school in Nebraska. We are in the smallest 11 man classification. We have six coaches on our football staff. One of the assistants is our principle, four of us teach full time, and the one that doesn't teach is enrolled at a nearby college. In Nebraska the majority of coaches all teach something or are in administrative roles.
