Does "Building" matter in 2026?

And if so, to what extent. Its probable that your good players are going to look around, your average, bad, or green players will likely stay. So with the model moving towards a year to year outlook, does building matter as opposed to assembly, organization, and execution?

with the portal now any one that’s a redshirt sophomore and older that isn’t two deep needs to go, ya gotta make room for better players.no more are the da of its takes 4-5 years to build a team a good chance if Rhule doesn’t make significant improvement he might be gone this time next year, that’s the ugly part of the beast of todays college football

We better have a lot of young DL step up. We'll never have enough if not. We will be in the se situation again. Getting it run down our throats. I dont care who they hire.

Its possible we have some good young players.

No, I don't think it matters anymore except for sustainability. It is NFL Lite. You can literally flip your roster at a P4 program and with a new coach make a playoff in year 2.

In that same light, at a P4 program, you should know whether you have the right coach by year 3.

P4 programs that can't afford to do this will not be P4 programs for long in this new model.

Most of our production returned for this season, including one of the best RBs in the nation and the best Freshman QB in the nation. We didn't lose hardly any production in the portal. We aren't good because our home developed kids aren't good, 90% of our oline has been at Nebraska for years and sucked, most of the dline as well. It is a combination of development and introducing a few transfer guys who are really good. Should be used like the juco day...if you are thin in an area, go get the best juco guy.

Hence my second paragraph.

Yes it does still matter. Because of the transfer portal and NIL, building can now be done several ways though.

I think "building" and "rebuilding" were mostly just dumb sayings that typified excuse-making for poor performance early on. Great coaches win quickly and that's happened from the very beginning of the sport.

But he WASNT one of the best RBs in the nation. Let's not try and go back and reverse engineer a narrative that wasn't the truth. EJ was questioned by EVERYBODY. Nobody thought he would end up being what he became. Who else would get to replace the guy who left. EJ can't make it through the BIG taking all those hits. EJ is too small. Why didn't we get the Marty Brown kid from Nebraska who went to Miami? You don't remember all the screen shots of what Brown was doing at Miami earlier in the year?

NObODY saw this EJ coming so if we wanna be truthful let's not act like one of our returning RBs was one of the best in the nation. When we all know AT THAT TIME that wasn't even up for discussion.

It does sound good when you are trying to paint a different picture tho....

Most husker fans were happy to have EJ back...I think most fans saw he has been the most effective back when running the ball for years now. He sucked in pass protection and wasn't great in the passing game. He still sucked in pass protection, and was better in the pass game. He still is a mediocre short yardage back and won't be a good NFL back because there just isn't the space in the NFL. But he was elusive the whole time and people loved watching him run.

I think there were way more questions concerning EJ than answers. Sure some "liked" him but the overwhelming majority did not think he was an every down back. Would not hold up to the pounding. We needed a "better" RB than him. Plus all kinds of other questions about him.

My initial point in my reply was that absolutely NOBODY looked at him as "one of the best RBs in the country" as you described him in your initial post. That was simply not true.

I mean we were still middle of the pack in rushing. I wanted another running back to help share the load and improve our rushing attack, even if EJ was still the lead back.

That's a reasonable take. The initial post was about EJ being a national top rated RB coming back which he clearly wasnt.
