Does everyone except Feli agree that we are in at this point?

I hope so, but the doom-and-gloom-er in me won't be happy until they the word "Northwestern" shows up with a number before it next Sunday evening.

Unless the committee "dings" a sub-par B10 conference, all the bracketology math says they are in.

And even if they ding the conference, as long as NU is top five in the conference, I'd bet they get in.

I think it would take a GINORMOUS upset for the Cats to be left out.

But I'm with Alvious until next Sunday.

Maybe only a season ending injury to McIntosh and being blown out by Purdue and in first game of BTT would keep NU out at this point.

There's is a (very) remote possibilty that all hell could break loose and NU has to sweat out next Sunday (eg: number of at large bids could shrink dramatically, resume could falter, lose to Rutgers in DC, etc). That being said, I'm not sure how anyone could be pessimistic about NU's chances of dancing, at the moment. It's more likely that NU will win the BTT and land a top 5 seed than miss out on the dance.

Things could theotetically change between now and next weekend (and we'll know if the doomsday scenario is still in play tonight), but today should be the easiest NU game to watch all year.

Given the number of NU alums that are sports journalists and decision-makers, it would not be in the NCAA's best interest to leave us out at this point.

How many bid thieves can there be at this point?

One from A-10, one from AAC, two from ACC (if Clemson loses in final), two from Big 10 (if it's like Indiana losing to Iowa or something), one from Big 12, one from Big East, one from CUSA, one with MWC, two from Pac-12 (if Cal loses in final to another big thief), one in Sun Belt, two in SEC, one from WCC. So that's 16 at the very most, but if there are that many, some of the multi-bid thief conferences above will go back to one bid. So really, if all hell breaks loose, there will be maybe 12 bid thieves. Assuming NU is currently around 35th overall, not all of those 12 bid thieves will push NU down. I just think the worst they can possibly get is 11th, and that is IN. Don't worry.

Let's revisit the question in 6.5 hrs, after we beat Purdue. As long as our guys stay out of foul trouble I love our chances.

This would be one of the conditions for doomsday.

You would also need:

1) NU losing out (including DC and at the hands of Rutgers)

2) Indiana falling out of the top 100 (bad loss). Not sure if this is even possible now. The Hoosiers beat OSU the other day.

3) Dayton to fall out of the top 25 RPI

4) Michigan, Wisconsin, Wake Forest all to fall out of the top 50

If ALL of this were to happen (and the committee were to stick their nose up at the BIG), it would make for a stressful selection Sunday.

Not gonna happen. The 'Cats are in.

Northwestern has become a national story and a darling of the media in the last two weeks. The selection committee knows this and will act accordingly. There is no way the Cats are left out this year.

There are a 8 seed and solidly in the tourney which means they are approx. between the no. 29-32 ranked team in the tourney. There will be approximately 44-46 at-large bids (seeds 1-11 and maybe 1 or 2 no. 12 seeded teams). The teams who are really on the bubble are Syracuse 18-13 (RPI 80), Wake Forest 18-12 (RPI 39), California 19-11 (RPI 55), Providence 20-11 (RPI 54), Marquette 19-11 (talented offensive team RPI 58), MSU (18-13 RPI 45), UM 19-11 (RPI 48)), Xavier is 19-12 (RPI 33 but are they going to take 7 Big East teams), Seton Hall 20-10 (RPI 49). Please recall that NU beat Wake Forest. There are not that many other at large mid-majors who would be eligible to take an at large bid (e.g. VCU or Dayton, Wichita St. or ISU, Mid. Tenn St., St. Marys and maybe two other mid-majors who have enough of a resume to steal an at-large bid if they lose their conference tourneys). That is why the ACC might have 10-11 teams in the tourney, Big East might have 7 and Big 10 might have 7 teams in the tourney. Mid-level teams in the power conference will get the benefit of the doubt or will get in ahead of the third team from the A10 like Rhode Island. So to answer your questions, that goofy poster is wrong again. Is that a shocker? No.

The issue today is whether Collins plays Benson and Pardon together against the Boilers two-big lineup and whether Law guards Edwards who killed NU in the first game going like 7-10 from 3s. With Lindsey in the game, Law might be able to guard someone his own size rather than chase after 6'0" PGs like Carson Edwards, because McIntosh is not known for his defensive skills. Another issue is whether Skelly and Lumpkin can guard Big 10 POY and maybe national POY Swanigan with fouling out in 10-15 minutes of action? Can Brown give us some production off the bench and rebound from a DNP-CD. And can Tap keep the magic going in his final game at WRA?

Today is an interesting matchup. I'm not sure what to expect from Purdue since we don't have a ton to play for. I'm really glad you guys are having a good season as I respect your program and coach quite a bit. Best of luck!

Of course not. I'm a Wildcat. Fortune is a feckless thug. I fully expect someone to interrupt selection Sunday and say, "There's been a mistake. Illinois, you guys are in."

Fail to see the purpose of this rush to proclaim NU in...why not just wait ONE WEEK to know for sure?
I am pretty sure there are SCENARIOS that would leave a 10-8 (especially a 10-9) NU out. There are FAR fewer that would leave an 11-7 or better NU out.
I reckon CC would much rather his players to believe they are NOT already in. That can only help the team.

OK, maybe the Russians will hack "The Committee" just like they did The Oscars.

(Perhaps they hold a long standing grudge that we have never featured Russian Folk Dances at Dance Marathon.)

I never bought what the doomsayers were peddling. Life is too short to fret about things one cannot control. I was there when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor. We did not give up then.

I for one am getting really tired of this nonsense.

The ultimate moving goalpost of negativity. A lasting dinosaur of NU dark ages negativism.

Sick of it. Just sick of it.

You know that Feli LIVES for these type of responses, correct? Much better to ignore or make fun of him; he doesn't like either of those options.

The worst case scenario is one in which 2 teams thought to be "out" manage to reach their tourney finals and BOTH end up getting in (the winner automatically, obviously, and the other on the strength of its run to the finals).

Say, Illinois and OSU reach the BTT final, and OSU wins it. OSU is suddenly in. Illy, which was practically discarded, strengthens its resume with its run to the point of earning an AL bid.

If such a scenario were to replicate itself at several conferences the competition for AL spots would become extremely ferocious.

Of course, it isn't terribly likely that the above occurs in multiple places. But there are also the more probable "single bid" thefts (where a thought-to-be-discarded team wins its conference tournament, "stealing" a bid, but no other "discarded" team from the conference benefits).

If situations as above were to occur multiple times, a 10-9 NU (which at that point would be 3-7 over its final 10 games) could definitely be left out.

Nope. Everyone disagrees with you. The board has spoken!

My guess would be that Feli comes up with some kind of argument that NU isn't actually part of the NCAA.

I'm still waiting on my board ban wager as well. Given Feli's penchant for not backing up his words with actions, I believe that both of us will be waiting a long time.

You're right. Sorry about that. I should let it go. It's tough to do, especially now when it's just patently obvious how things are heading up!

He's just such a Debbie Downer. I know it has to be intentional on his part. Nobody could be that clueless and disjointed from obvious reality. At least nobody who adheres to his proper medication regimen.

There are sports fans like that. I have experienced them across all sports. Makes you wonder what pleasure they even get out of following their teams, though.

I am fairly certain that he IS that clueless. He bases everything on stats without actually watching games...

When Feli posts / trolls his drivel, I am sometimes reminded of a quote from Martin Luther, whose contrarian views eventually gained traction and changed the world:

“I’m like a ripe stool and the world’s like a gigantic anus, and we’re about to let go of each other.”
