Does having an elite basketball program take the sting out of football sucking?

Does for me somewhat.

Just imagine how bleak it would be if we didn't have a great basketball program to take away the sting of yet another season of terrible football.

I'm a huge basketball fan, but I'm a UK fan. During basketball season it's not so bad. During football season I don't want to hear the word basketball. That's the problem.
This^. Once basketball gets rolling, my concerns about football diminish a little bit, but I continue to follow FB recruiting and other FB developments.

In response to the OP's question, my response is "not really.

Ready for the flames. Given the level of future NBA talent on the rosters, the case can be made that UK has under performed in basketball.

It would help quite a bit if the rest of the SEC (and nation) looked at basketball like we did. We're like the kid that doesn't get picked for kickball at lunch time but we can climb the hell out of the monkey bars so we get to be excited about being great at something that basically no one else cares about.

The elite basketball program had some pretty atrocious losses to crummy teams last year.

We WIN. that's the point. And Cal probably has another decade at UK. If he wins 3 titles in 12 years with 7 final fours would you still consider that underachieving?

Let's wait until he finishes his career. If he wins 1 title in 14 or 15 years, I'd probably agree to an extent. But we're a long way from that.

Not one bit. There are only about 4 states in the union that favor basketball over football. Football simply means more.

Rights to televise the NCAA tournament are now at $1 billion per year. Somebody cares about NCAA basketball, and it's not just us.

You've got to love this kind of gross misrepresentation. Is college basketball as popular as college football? No.

Is it the 2nd most popular NCAA sport, by a wide margin, and does it capture the entire nation's attention and enthusiasm during March Madness? Absolutely.

Not quite..basketball is a major sport, your analogy would work with the rifle team or soccer

I call BS. It's not like that at all. March madness is regularly cited as the most intriguing postseason tournament in any level of any sport in America.

college football is 2nd to NFL in popularity but that doesn't mean it's lame to care about CFB. Hell they both pale in popularity across the globe to soccer. Doesn't mean I shouldn't care about them.

The fact is that very few if ANY UK fans that love both FB and BB would trade UKs athletic success for any other school's.

No not all, Football is the big boy sport and should be the sport we should want to be good. There are 4 states that care about BB, Ky, Ind, NC, Kansas. People follow NCAA BB for two weeks. The NCAA championship does not even get the ratings of the SEC championship FB game or big SEC game of week.

No one really cares about BB and the fact that UK is good is good but it does nothing for me to not have a seat at the grown ups table at Thanksgiving, UK is sitting at the kids table yapping about BB and a sport no one cares about.

I went to watch games last night and the jokes were terrible, wait until Midnight Madness or you scored 7 against Fl., the patronizing. It is pure agony to me to not be part of the narrative of college FB, a game on a Saturday afternoon in October is glorious or used to be. Sitting in Rupp watching UK play Cheese burger state does nothing. It is awful to be so bad to not matter at all is depressing as hell.

UK needs to join the big boy world, it can still be good at BB but BB means squat to so few in comparison.

I wish the football team would under perform to the level of the basketball team...

Bb and fb should not be pitted against each other and fb first fans is the only reason that happens . They want everybody that likes basketball first to like football first and are jealous that bb is successful . Rupp came and built something , it took off and that's just the way the cookie crumbles .

You can't turn 75 years of awesome off just because fb is more popular , even if you focused primarily on football it wouldn't be an elite school anyway . For me BB is more fun to watch , more action , takes less time , tournament is like no other and I actually get nervous . I can understand people liking fb more , strange that they can't see any other option .

I've been saying this for sometime. And football has its own issues in the coming decades. The rules are changing and what we know as football is not the future. And don't even get me started on the NFL. There has never been a more overrated league in any sport. It's like groundhogs day watching that crappy product. Same thing, same uniforms, same game, same plays, same, same, same, same, same over and over and over. The NFL is far and away the most boring league in any sport to me, and last I looked it's slowly losing popularity. An example of the switch is high school baseball. Schools around Shelby co. Are holding tryouts for the first time ever recently. Parents are becoming more and more fearful of football.

No it doesn't. I want UK to do well in both sports.

And basketball is so different from football, but I agree with the one guy who said we have underachieved (just a tiny bit). If we win it all in 2015 I am not making this statement, but as the other poster said...Cal still has time. If he wins another title, and wins 2 in 10-11 years, that is a good run in this era.
