Does Lewis not coming help us land Wilkerson ?

They aren’t really that similar as players, so I wouldn’t have thought they would affect each other that much. Maybe it frees up some more money to throw at Wilkerson, but he’s not a point guard, so I don’t know that the roster situation is that different for him.

I think we were getting Wilkerson anyways.

Makes me wonder if we have more cash to get back in on the Pierre convo now….or close on Lee and Wilkerson.

then again….maybe Pope signs Wilkerson and guarantees Jasper backup minutes at the 1 and 2 to get his 20+ min a game. And you have Chandler as the 3rd backup and Perry as the break in case of emergency

I mean, it definitely doesn’t hurt.

TBH, I don’t think it changes anything with Wilkerson. I think the fact Pope is still recruiting guards shows he’s going for the kill shot this year, and Lewis simply didn’t want to take a year to develop behind more college ready guards.

It’s “a bad look” to our rivals, but **** em. Who cares what they think. Good luck to the young man, and let’s sign another proven, college ready guard and go after number 9.

Welp. Not claiming this doesn’t suck a big wad but we’re not going to be replacing Butler 1 for 1 no matter what happens. I still don’t expect any freshman besides maybe Jasper Johnson and somewhat Nate Ament if he comes to make much of a difference this coming season. So let’s just go out and buy us a Lamont Butler 1b with our mad money over this one.

Preferably someone who doesn’t face a “very difficult decision” about whether or not he wants to be here.

Terrible news. I think Jasper would de-commit as well had he not been from Kentucky. You can’t recruit talented players like that and expect them to ride the pine.
The same Jasper that just talked Quaintance into coming to the table and hearing what Pope and UK had to offer?

Sure.

Some dudes are DOGS that aren't afraid of being on a team with other DOGS.

And other dudes are just Charmin soft.

He wasn't going to "ride the pine", he was going to play a ton.
Yep.

Folks will rip Pope for not signing the '92 Dream Team in the portal and then rip him for having the audacity to sign multiple guys at the same position (apparently every college team ever has only played 5 guys 40 minutes a game every game each season and I just haven't been paying attention). And then they'll turn around and rip him next season if there's injury or foul trouble and we don't have quality depth.

I think it will be your last statement honestly. JJ gets to play PG and SG to showcase his talents and the minutes that comes with that. Secure Wilkerson and let’s roll with the guards

Exactly.

More minutes for Johnson and a chance for him to play some at PG, which is probably his NBA position.

Bottom line is Pope knew he needed more experience at PG and went out and got Lowe and Lewis knew that combined with us still pursuing a SG meant there was not enough meaningful minutes for both him and Johnson. With Johnson likely being the better prospect, he decided to cut bait and move on rather than fight for minutes.

I still don't have a good grasp on how good Lewis is.
I feel like Pope targeted him because he wasn't a OAD PG.
Maybe Lewis still viewed UK as a place that freshman start.
This type of thing will be a problem every year simply because HS players make commitments in Nov and portal season doesn't start until April.
The only good thing is it puts us firmly back in play for Kinney who probably would have viewed UK as too crowded with both Lewis and Lowe on the roster.

Lock up Wilkerson (or Pierre or someone similar) and the team is set.

PG Lowe/Johnson/Perry
SG Wilkerson/Chandler
SF Oweh/Williams/Noah
PF Garrison/Dioubate
C Quaintance/Moreno

Might add one more developmental player, but I think this is it for meaningful roster spots.
I’d still like one more combo guard shooter I think Chandler works much better at SF but what do I know.

Almost all top 50 recruits think they are NBA ready now

Get Wilkerson, and prep Jasper/Chandler to be PGs 2 and 3, PLUS we have Perry who is capable, and let's ride.
You had me up to this point. I like Perry as he seems like a great kid but if he was from Minnesota we wouldn't be saying he is capable. I've witnessed this fan base ready to get rid of players who had better production than Travis.
