Does MSU have any weaknesses?

All I'm reading/hearing right now is praise for MSU. Obviously the QB, but also the WR, OL, DL, etc. I haven't heard anyone in the media so far speak of any weaknesses.

I think MSSt is a lot like South Carolina. Both have a good starting 22, but things drop off pretty quickly after that. I recall a number of seasons where MSSt started off great, was ranked pretty high in the polls and then had a few injuries and the bottom fell out late in the season. SC has had plenty of seasons like that as well.

Minnesota had 13 yds rushing for the whole game. State was leading 28-3 at halftime. They played cover 2 D, keeping everything in front of them for the rest of the game. Their D gave up a total of 6 points in the game. Every team wants a "soft D" like that.

Where i am perplexed is LS seems to do better when Oline breaks down and thus begins scratch plays vs. being able to operate a scheme. At time LS looks more like a big RB vs a decisive QB.

LS looks like a big RB because that is exactly what he is. He is a great athlete playing the QB position, not a great QB who is also a great athlete.

Beamer uses LS like a HS coach uses the best athlete on his team. He puts him at QB and expects him to out athlete the defense. Unfortunately, in the SEC, and college in general, the field is full of great athletes.

To answer your question. Coming into the season it was OL and depth at DL. The OL last year was atrocious, so they basically started over. First 2 games the OL has played amazing, especially against Minnesota. The Gophers had a couple highly thought of DL and basically was a non factor. The OL play has people exited because they basically have 4 track guys at WR and Taylor had time to make reads. The WRs are not big but they can fly. Also we have really good depth at RB. Fluff is a workhouse RB, that’s fantastic with pass blocking. I was really surprised how slow Minnesota was, I didn’t expect that.

I know how hard it can be to win at Williams Brice. I feel like it will be a close loss for MSU but it’s also a measuring stick game for both teams. We will both know a lot about our teams after Saturday.

They beat LA-Monroe and Minnesota. People need a reality check until further notice. Now if they’re 6-0 and Taylor is still playing like that then maybe they’re a contender. I mean it’s Mississippi State. This sort of reminds me of the Kentucky game two years ago and everyone was all pessimistic about the game then Carolina beat the hell out of em.

He did qualify his praise a bit by saying it's only been 2 games and maybe MSU and Taylor come back down to earth this week. But his prediction is we don't have the horses to hang with them.

We have real weaknesses. Mostly our WRs. That seems to be the #1 issue everyone agrees on, even Beamer. Can't catch, can't block.

See, this is they type of noise that I think has made Sellers worse. I think Sellers heard the noise that he is just a runner and went out of his way to just being a drop-back QB. He is not that. Probably will never be that. He is an A+ athlete with a cannon for an arm that has accuracy issues. Basically, he is a Cam Newton-like player. He needs to lean into that as he gets better as a passer. I think Shula really messed that kid up and hopefully Briles can bring him back. I was encouraged with him being aggressive with the run last Saturday. He, also, has been fine so far as a passer. Sellers passing numbers were really skewed with all the drops last week. Granted, he has played against non-competitive teams, but you have to perform against who is on the schedule. I just want the kid to go out and play free and play his style of game if he is going to fail.

We only gave up 9 points in our game, and I was not impressed with the performance. Allowed Towson to possess the ball for far too long during stretches of the game. I am aware that points is the final measure of a defense. However, you can see problems that are going to raise its head against better teams even when you don't give up a lot of points.
