Does Pope get fired if they finish last in the SEC?

I never said you couldn't engage in hypotheticals. I said you are going extreme negative with your hypothetical.

To be fair I guess it is more the OP's hypothetical as opposed to being yours.
Obviously it’s hypothetical, but I don’t think it’s far fetched. This team is offensively challenged, they can’t shoot, and they don’t like playing defense. They’re terrible.

Firing BCG had more to do with his methods and behavior than many think. Pope is a great guy, but in a day and age where teams can be built in a couple of weeks due to transfer rules, more blame should be put on the coach.

I dont want him fired yet, but hypothetically speaking, does he get a 3rd year if they place dead last and miss the tourny?

I hate to be a Debbie downer, but after watching all these other games lately…we look so unorganized without a shred of defensive knowledge. (That’s back to back years with Popes inability to teach defense).

I’m hoping for a turnaround, but we’re going to need more of a Christmas miracle to get this back on the tracks.
These posts are out of hand. This team has a zero percent chance of finishing last in the SEC. Worst case is we are 8-10th in SEC and best case 3-5th range. At this point we aren’t some bottom feeding team, we just aren’t a top 25 team yet. Half the SEC is clearly worse than us maybe more, we just have higher standards at UK. We will see if this team can turn the corner or not.

We will not finish last in the SEC. It isn't happening. That said, we really don't know much about this team. They have lost every Quad 1 game they played and destroyed every Quad 4 team they played. They haven't played a single Quad 3 or Quad 2 game. Let's let the season play out.

I don't think it would take finishing last. I think if he finished worse than 8-10 in SEC he would get fired.

I hope you’re right, but I don’t see it. They’re terrible, and they’re getting worse.

Its not like we’re losing close ones, we’re getting annihilated. This isn’t a middle of the pack sec team.

Suggesting that our expectations have fallen is beyond ridiculous. You think he has intentionally drug the program down? I assume you are referring to Tubby with the second part. Who was AD then? Nobody is OK with how things are going. Some of us just aren't impetuous babies that demand heads roll as soon as things don't go our way. It hasn't actually been one bad season for Pope yet. I'll see if we can turn this around before making definitive declarations.

Barnhart wanted to retain Tubby in 2006. He was going to offer him a contract and even Tubby knew he was done. That’s accepting mediocrity specially when everyone including Tubby knew he couldn’t maintain expectations here and the wheels were falling off sir. You must not remember.

As soon as things don’t go our way? This is Kentucky basketball who hasn’t been past the sweet 16 in how many years? We haven’t won the SEC in how many years? Would you think a decade of this is sufficient? When can heads roll? Longest final four drought in school history? Is that enough? Beat downs to Alabama, tournament losses to Tennessee, lost 5 of 6 to Duke. Is that enough? When is your time to say changes must be made in major ways? We’re barely above .500, not enough? What do you need to say everything is not okay and you’re not a baby for thinking major changes need to be made? Because I can guarantee you, you wanted to retain Calipari even though he was sucking to a major level. When are you okay with changes? Go ahead?

I don't know exactly how boosters might react and neither do you. The season is a long way from played out so you are just going extreme negative with a hypothetical at this point anyway.
Why do you keep acting like if the season turns around a little it’s okay? We are now 6-4, at Kentucky. We’ve been blown out by all significant programs, 0-4. You think it matters if we make a sweet 16 run? That’s lowered expectations here sir, it’s by definition. You’re proving the point keep going.

Mitch should already be talking to other coaches to see what interest is. This Pope thing isn't working out
I’m not calling for a change yet. I think it’s smart to wait and we might as well with Mark, because we can fix it immediately if it doesn’t work out. Let’s see, but as of right now I see nothing that tells me he’s going to make it. This was the worst time to slip to this point.

He defended Stoops till the day he was fired so what he’s doing on the board lately doesn’t surprise me. I don’t understand where he’s coming from at all in this thread. Makes no sense to me.

You don't fire a coach that had 1 good season and 1 bad start to a season. You all are forgetting how excited this fan base was last year with last year's team, and how happy everyone was to get back to the 2nd weekend in the tournament. Yes this season sucks so far, yes its been a disaster, but you don't fire somebody for 1 bad season. You give him a chance to fix it. Now if he doesn't feel capable of fixing it and wants to resign then that's on him. But no athletic director should fire Mark Pope for 1 bad start to a season.

Oh. Not worth arguing if he was defending Stoops. Everyone including Barnhart, who’s never knows when to call it, knew that was dead.

It’s a weird psychology when someone will fight to the death over a coach. It turns into a Univeristy of Coach thing which makes no sense to me. Data, results. If it’s not there you protect the program.

But Barnhart has done a fantastic job gaslighting the fanbase into believing average is great, or even bad is great, and so some just couldn’t mentally handle it.

Everyone keeps bringing up Clyde being fired after year 2, but he also had all kinds of reports of borderline abuse towards his players and no relationship with the fans or administration.

Pope won't be fired until year 3. Only way he gets fired before that is if some giant scandal breaks.
Pope is the opposite. He is too soft. His guys don’t respond to him. He has nothing for next year. It’s actually worse. It’s easier to dial it down. Bcg freaked out and drank like a fish. Pope on the other hand looks sick on the sidelines.

North Carolina is better than the bottom half of the SEC. We were beating them the entire game until late and lost by 3. Yes we got hammered by Gonzaga and MSU, Louisville we cut it to 4 late. As disappointing as we’ve been we aren’t a bottom dweller.

If we get 20 or 30 balled by IU and Pitino, Pope will have no support left. Other than UKcowboys. He's going down with the ship. Lifeboats be damned.
Mark really should reach out to Nick Saban. Mark has a major coaching philosophy problem and a culture problem. I’ve said this for a few months now and even said it last year when he seemed to be far too opposite of all the greats before him. Now I find it really important he do it. Great coaches have been helped by this guy in spades.

Saban is a genius. And not just at anything he’s a genius at knowing how to build a culture and produce a winning mindset.

I do believe the first thing Saban would say is stop hiring assistants for charity and familiarity. Fox shouldn’t be here, this was a scratch back hire. Saban knew you’re only as good as your assistants. He surrounded himself with men that had extreme talent, look at the 2015 coaching staff at Alabama. Mark Fox doesn’t fit that bill.

so I really do believe he should reach out to Saban and have a zoom call. Saban would do it. Let him explain why your methods aren’t working and how to build your culture.

What the hell is this?

Sir, this is the university of Kentucky. I don’t know if you’re confusing this with the university of Eastern Kentucky, if you are that’s fine. Did you get lost on the way to the EKU board?

Why are you splitting hairs suck at UK is suck at UK. Good lord. Who cares if it’s last or 3 from last.

University of Kentucky. Some of you would be wise to read up on who we are and what our history is.

We cut it to 4 late? It was embarrassing. They were playing with us like a cat and mouse.

This team can go nearly the majority of a half without a basket. What team have we ever had in your life that turned out decent that can go 12 mins without a field goal?

As I said, hope you’re right….but I don’t see it.

we are not going to have a losing season, it is going to be a subpar season, but we will not finish below 500
I hope you are right.

I can’t believe I’m wishing for subpar. But subpar is better than a losing season.

If JQ doesn’t play I can’t see us not having a losing season. If he starts playing and stays in the lineup we could even be good.

Mitch Barnhart has been creating apathy and lowering expectations here for 20 years. He’s done it slowly but intentionally. Pope would survive being last yes.

I remember before the Barnhart effect when we would nearly fire coaches for too many 10 loss seasons or too many elite 8’s. Now look at the what this bum has created. It’s acceptable to completely suck at UK now. And we’ve still got 25% of the base that’s okay with it too, as long as the coach is okay.

Here's what I remember .. Tubby had Draymond Green coming in to join Meeks and Ppat and may the Lucas kid might have come .. Tubby wasn't on some continuing downward trend .. it was up and down throughout his tenure .. It was going be a good uptick again but he had lost the fan base

Have you never heard of “ten loss tubby?” The pressure was mounting on him and most of the fanbase wanted him gone. The pressure mounted and he left for Minnesota. He was replaced. He never missed the tournament, made 4 or 5 elite 8’s out of 10 years. He was ran out and nearly fired (it was coming) for 10 loss seasons, too many elite 8’s, and that’s a fact.

You obviously either weren’t here or don’t know sht.

This is absolute bs. The wheels were falling off hard. Lucas was never coming here, you’re just making up nonsense. Patterson likely was going Florida. He said Gillispie is the one who convinced him because he laid out his entire career during a recruiting visit and called Lucas to say he was going Kentucky. He was on a severe downward trend. He lost major recruits and was bleeding out. Green was coming, but that’s not enough to offset how bad it was getting on tubby. The man left and bombed out hard. He was headed for the same fate here. That year was going NIT for tubby smith. Why do you think he left in the middle of the night? He knew it.

You haven’t got a damn clue what you’re talking about.
