I don’t know man. As someone who gets a lot of hate for not conforming to either of the imaginary forces, I do think people fail to see there are just different types of fans. You may feel you are the “right” kind of fan, but the opposing view would see their view as the “right” kind of fan. If you really start thinking about it, mob mentality denies logic:

FAN TYPE 1: PROGRAM DEMANDS FIRST

This group believes that the chief priority of a fan is to hold the program to a high standard of excellence. Because of this, they will see the fanbase as a major asset. They would see loyalty to coaches as having a negative effect on the overall health of the program. From their standpoint, over-emphasis on empathy to coaches would relax the standard and become excuse-making. This group usually has an emotional collective conscious — they may aggressively confront those with an opposing view as they see those people as “shills” or “fake fans.”

FAN TYPE 2: TEAM DEMANDS FIRST

This group believes that the chief priority of a fan is to help support the current team by providing support. They would see fans who fail to do this as being a detriment to the program. They would see loyalty to coaches as having a positive effect on the overall health of the program. From their standpoint, a lack of emphasis on empathy to the coach and team result in creating team distractions and can negatively affect on-court performance. This group will often look for underlying causes of various team issues and will refer to these as “reasons” rather than “excuses.” This group usually has an emotional collective conscious — they may aggressively confront those with an opposing view as they see those people as “trolls” or “fake fans.”

^ Almost everyone on the board will fall in those groups and these two groups always talk past one another and always fail to understand the viewpoint of the other. While I think there are truths to both, I think there are serious errors with each.
Very reasonable take. I'm happy to be a part of the former category

I actually think both groups are correct. It’s why I found both concepts rather silly. I’ve probably had about 100 angry comments from Group 1 for not explicitly agreeing to fire Mark Pope at the moment they’ve decided it’s time, and I’ve had about 100 angry comments from Group 2 for being too hypercritical toward the tactical coaching. I just pay attention to what I think people are actually saying and the “why”. That’s why I can get along with people from Group 1 “20M Roster” and Group 2 “UKCowboys.” I’ll catch flak from both —- and both sides will find me equally condescending. In my mind, I’m not being condescending, I’m providing a third way of thinking that’s actually more nuanced and can have all fans in it without fighting over who the “true” fans are. Both groups are true fans and should celebrate when we win.

there are passive people and active people. it's a mentality thing.
use traffic as an example.
when i drive down New Circle, speed limit is 55 but there's always somebody going 35 in the fast lane.
the passive approach is to wait patiently behind the slow driver while a line of a dozen cars piles up behind you.
these are the mark pope fans. on cruise control, literally and figuratively. avoid confrontation at all costs and keep the peace at the expense of maintaining any personal integrity. when things are going wrong, they will never acknowledge it until it's too late. that's in their wiring

the active approach is to aggressively tailgate them or pass them from the right lane while honking and waving your middle finger. this is my approach. rip the band-aid off and embrace the confrontation when it comes. prioritize maintaining your standards while knowing that it will rub people the wrong way.

and right now UK is a Ferrari trying to speed down the highway while Mark Pope is hogging both lanes with a '76 Ford Pinto.

Love it! I’m always down for a little meta conversation.

Hate is the wrong word here. Hate implies towards the character and man who Pope is. No one here hates the man.

Most don't SUPPORT him as coach. The correct word is Support, not Hate.

It sucks that he can't get it done, because he is one of us. But at the end of the day, he unfortunately doesn't have it to be the coach at UK.

I actually like the OP Morg, but I’ve never understood his viewpoint on this. At the beginning of the season, he was saying Pope did well last year and now he’s progressed directly into “not only should Mark Pope be hated, but all the fans should hate him too.” That’s lunacy — fire him? Sure. Hate him? No. He’s just doing his job terribly.

I don't get why so many on here say that Pope is soooooo smart. Smart is defined in many ways. A welder is smart at certain things, but most likely wouldn't make a good bank teller. A bank teller is smart at making change but doesn't know anything about welding. Being smart is relative to what you do. Pope might be smart at being a doctor or crunching numbers, but he is not smart when it comes to being a basketball coach; in fact, he's an off-the-scales idiot.

Not even child molesters?
This is a topic that can get deeply theological. The answer is yes and no.

There is a heretical view called “equality of sins.” While one sin is grievous to an eternally holy God, resulting in the falling short of perfection required for eternal communion with God, many assume this means all sins have the same magnitude of seriousness. This is false.

It is biblical to desire the repair of people who have sinful proclivities of such a serious nature, without condoning or approving such behavior.

God is both a just judge (knowing and discerning our hearts and minds) and the justifier of his creation. We will all stand in judgment for our own sins and the only hope we have is faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ on our behalf — his merciful sacrifice on the cross that atoned for sins.

I have no idea what that means. But I know this. Pope, who is sooooo smart, was on a Rick Pitino team that played a highly successful style of basketball. Pope played for 2 years and learned absolutely zero, nothing, zilch. That's not what I call smart. He also saw this team allllll summer long and somehow thought he had a Ferrari he couldn't wait to drive, when he had a broken-down 1957 Volkswagen Beetle. We like kids in summer wishing Christmas would hurry its azz up and get here, ate it up. Pope actually thought he was in bed with Cindy Crawford when he was actually in bed with Maxine Waters. Don't dwell on that too long, or you're gonna hurt yourself and bad. This should tell us that the guy has NO clue how to evaluate talent, therefore we are fvcked as long as he's here. Hope no one takes this personally, but MP is the true village idiot. In fact, the mods should make the poster called "I'm the Village Idiot" change their user name. That one clearly belongs to MP.

You just described my biggest pet peeve. Ugh, I can't stand people that poke in the left lane. You give them a stare as you go bye and they just look at you like you're mad for nothing.
Now that everything is on your phone and weed is legal, people just cruise in the left lane high off their asses, watching you tube and avoiding merging traffic.
I wish I had the ability to remote control their asses over to the right lane.

Right now, my hate is firmly on Mitch Barnhart for putting us in this position. Pope understandingly took his dream job, even if he was doomed to fail, I get it. Pope, however, has an opportunity to ease our pain and resign at the end of the season. Accepting that things just aren’t working out. We’d all understand.

Pope’s a smart guy, he has to know another year won’t change anything, especially considering how badly recruiting is going and likely next year’s NIL funds will be squeezed to nearly nothing. He’d have to be delusional or just plain greedy.

But what if he doesn’t step down? From the last few days several fans claim he won’t leave for monetary reasons. Effectively suggesting that Pope would throw the program under the bus for the sake of the almighty dollar. Some of these fans don’t appear to have a very high opinion of Pope if they think he won’t leave after this disaster of a year. Personally, I’m not entirely convinced one way or another. What if they’re right? Do you think Pope begins to deserve the fans’ ire if he foolishly returns for another year?
No
