Does Vedral Start

Do you think Vedral starts Saturday? I know Frost said a couple weeks ago, he wanted to get him in when possible. With us not having a bye week, and by all accounts Bethune Cookman should be a very winnable game. This to me seems like the perfect game to stick Vedral in and let Martinez get rested for Ohio St. Hopefully if all goes well, we can' have many of our guys resting by the 3rd.

No. Hopefully we can play well and rest him later in the game.
I agree. I would maybe feel differently if Martinez wasn’t a true freshman, but since he is, as good as he’s been for us he still needs the reps. Get a big lead early and then let Bunch/Vedral come in.

They both should play, no question, but I believe Martinez needs to play as well.

No way Frost takes BC that seriously. Masker gets the start.

All starters, including the qb, should play against BC, this team is not good enough to take time off. If it’s a blowout beginning the third quarter, play them a series and then start inserting 2nd and 3rd teamers until BC storms back to send it into ot. ;)

Seriously, Martinez should play at least a half, or close to it.

I have never seen a coach for any team just give his starting QB the day off from playing, no matter who they were playing. Unless it was the NFL and the postseason seeding couldn’t be impacted by a win or a loss.

You have to start Martinez. Give him his reps and then when the game is clearly in hand, insert the other guys.

Considering the depth chart came out earlier today and lists Martinez and then Bunch, I doubt we see anything from Vedral on Saturday unless we are so far ahead we can risk putting in the third string. But this is not 1995 Nebraska so I doubt we get past getting the back ups reps.

Why are we being ridiculous now?
You have to ask? Don’t you know, it’s all the rage to sit your starting QB because you are playing an inferior opponent. Gotta get him “rested up”. [/sarcasm]
A true frosh starter needs all the reps he can get. The sharper he is for tOSU, the better.

No, you want Martinez and the rest of those starters to get as many reps as possible with OSU coming up the following week! I like the idea of not having a bye in this situation so as to not get cold and keep the momentum. The more reps we can get, the better off we are. JMO.

The one time I can recall this is 1995 Northern Illinois at Florida when Spurrier sat Danny Wuerffel. From Wikipedia:

"At homecoming the following week, backup quarterback Eric Kresser played in place of Wuerffel for the Northern Illinois game, a 58–20 defeat of the Huskies. Kresser threw for a school record 458 yards, breaking the record Terry Dean set against Southwestern Louisiana in 1993. Kresser passed for six touchdowns to six different players, including a 96-yard pass to Jacquez Green on a crossing route.
Despite the performance, Spurrier felt Kresser threw better in pre-game warmups. The Gators improved to 8-0 for the first time since 1928."

And now you know :D

Edit: I think Iowa State started their 2nd- or 3rd-string QB against us on Senior Day in 1992 and beat us 19-10.

Lmao...We are 1-6. Play everybody. And whomever doesn't play hard. Doesn't play against Ohio St.

Some of you are worried about wins too much. We are rebuilding.

Play the starters for the first half. Assuming the game is well in hand, bring in second/third teamers, seniors, and guys redshirting.

Thanks for the lesson... interesting to see it happen. Not surprising considering it was Spurrier. :)

Thanks!

I still think there needs to be a balance. I don’t disagree that we should play a lot of players. But to not start our QB or any other starters seems like a little much.

Man, the narrative is changing. We are so good we don't even need to start our top QB? We used to be opining for a win of some kind.

Maybe we should start all second stringers to avoid injuries. Why stop at QB?
So true. I remember numerous posts last week where people were saying that we may not win 1 game this year and that we were the worst team in college football.

If they play hard and well...They won't need to play the starters.

Yep, 100% agree. AM is unreal but as a true freshman he needs the experience. As stated by timnsun, get the big lead and "then" play Bunch/Vedral.

Why are we worried about getting backups experience when our starters have us at 1-6 with a loss to Troy?

Love this team and I’m holding out hope to shock Mich St or Iowa, but some of y’all need to remember how bitter that preseason koolaid tasted when we got mauled by Michigan.

That's easy NO WAY. He may play if we are way ahead but he doesn't start and doesn't play early.

Looks like Vedral is going to be a career backup He will play in blowouts and if AM gets injured. He actually could play this weekend. Is he ready?

This thread really epitomizes the free board.

1. Nebraska is 1-6, and shouldn't be sitting starters regardless of opponent.

2. However, Bethune-Cookman will be the least talented football team to EVER visit Lincoln. They would be a double digit underdog to NW Missouri State. UNK could hang with them for 4 quarter game. I'm greatly relieved Nebraska won last week because I would be incredibly embarrassed to get win #1 vs BC.

3. Fans who think Nebraska could play poorly and lose this game are not thinking logically. BC is NOT on par with teams like Troy or Northern Illinois or Southern Miss. They are going to be immensely outclassed.

A few more things:

Big Ten teams don't get the benefit of playing non con games with 8 games of film to prepare for their opponent. I can guarantee Nebraska knows exactly where to attack this team. On the flipside, the BC defensive coordinator is probably scrambling to create a game plan after watching the Minnesota game.

When non con FCS programs get to play Big Ten teams in early September, they usually have their full rosters at their disposal. By week 9, these programs are dealing with injuries like all other levels. This is problematic because of the scholarship disparity. BC will be trotting into town with really only about 50 scholarship players they can count on..

Temps will be in the 40s during pre game warm ups. BC hasn't played a game in under 80 degrees yet this season. I guarantee some of those players are going to be struggling on Saturday morning. I remember practicing early mornings in August with some teammates from Florida. Temps would be in the low 70s, and those dudes were bitching about the cold.

Why only the QB position? Personally, we should consider this for the entire 2-deep on both the offense and defense. Let the 3rd & 4th stringers start the game and bring in the scout team at halftime. Everybody gets to rest up for OSU and the Huskers look like the biggest humanitarians by only beating BC by a 100-0 score.

Martinez needs to continue to get snaps. There's a big part of Frost's offense that isn't even fully up and running here and that's a chance to get them working on it, and despite being amazing last week, Martinez still isn't always making the right reads and has had moments where he looks like a Frosh.

He starts and Vedral and Bunch both play, If I had to guess

Additionally, this week of practice can sort out snaps for a bigger pool of players. The guys who step up can get more playing time down the stretch

To me, this is sort of a glorified scrimmage, so you use the time to the best of your ability to improve. If that means 1st string plays 3/4 of the game, then so be it, but I have a feeling the score will be so out of whack, that we may see 3rd & 4th string in the second half exclusively.
