At least til tournament time. This season I’m noticing I follow it even less because the games I may be interested in watching are on the internet ESPN+ service. I didn’t even know WVU was playing Kansas til this morning.

I think in the coming years the health of college basketball will really take a big hit if this continues cause it ain’t close to the popularity of football. Then again I may just be out of the age range that follows it.

Haha. There very tone deaf. It’s like they’re watching baseball or golf or napcar for how to grow interest in their sport.

will tune in in March for the 2nd season ...... maybe

We are seeing the future of conference “TV”.

Very soon a streaming service will be the home of a conference network.

Hulu, Netflix or some other similar service will be the home of a network (or two). They now pour money into TV shows and movies and Disney-ABC-ESPN can not afford to gobble up everyone or everything .

Welcome to the future.

Exclusive content.

ESPN+ is a test.
Going to see what schools have fanbases that will demand a product so they can watch their team.

This helps for two things.
1) When the conference renegotiates first and second tier rights they have more platforms.
You are willing to buy a product to watch your school

2) Gives ESPN your third tier rights so if the Big 12 collapses they have a say in where everyone goes.
Plus they can see the fanbases that demand a product.

Hey when a conference can’t get enough interest in starting a conference network ESPN+ happens. Thanks Texas you losers.

SEC first tier rights are heading that way as well.
CBS told them no and ESPN stepped in.

Going to be on the same platform

I thought you are business minded...

Cuts the middle man out.

No need for cable and satellite companies. They cut into the profit.
ESPN can provide their channels on their own platform

I would rate the whole ESPN Plus experience as a C- and that is probably too generous, from paying, to getting signed in, to the experience of watching a low quality stream. On the positive side, there is a lot of room for improvement. Maybe the experience is better on an Android or Apple phone, but I can't say much for it on a Windows 10 laptop.

Why do they think fans already subscribe and pay for cable and sports packages? To not watch their favorite teams? They are making fans pay more for lower quality content than what was previously included in their subscriptions at higher quality. As has already been mentioned numerous times, many can't even watch the games because they don't have access to high speed internet. If you think $5/mo is nothing, just wait. I assure you it will go up the more people subscribe to it.

Now way in hell I'm getting ESPN+. For that matter I don't even get regular ESPN except for football season. The NCAA tournament at the end renders the regular season fairly meaningless. And on top of that, although ESPN has a lot of games their coverage is awful.

ESPN doesn't cover sports per se but rather they pay to broadcast certain sports and then use their platform to incessantly promote them. In any game on ESPN you watch you'll get dozens of promotions (direct and indirect) for upcoming games in addition to the incessant ticker across the bottom of the screen. Marketing, marketing, marketing, sell, sell, sell, sell, sell, sell. Garbage. Junk. It takes away the enjoyment of watching a game when they're constantly distracting you with the other stuff they're selling.

Gives ESPN more power.
You have to understand the way college sports is heading and why.

Cable and Satellite companies will have to find their own content. Some are heading that direction already.

Doesn't make sense for ESPN to negotiate with these companies and hassle with them when they can provide their own content.

This wasn't the case. Now it is.
Going to see more of their events behind the paywall as we go on.

lots of truth there.

I am never paying for ESPN+. The SOBs get enough out of me when my only viewing is college football Saturdays.

Buddy of mine (UVA fan) got Disney for the grandkids and the ESPN+ came with it. He's never watched it before Wednesday's game. Invited me over to watch and I refused - won't even give the dirty bums my money or time by proxy. He told me the next day there is literally nothing else worth watching on there at all so that's why he was surprised when a big game like KU and WVU was on there.
Told him Saturday's game was on there as well.

Got no problem paying to watch something. Would have no trouble if every game went pay-per-view (which in the future it probably will). Yet, I will refuse and continue to refuse to give ESPN any money when a game of the magnitude of KU and BU are replaced by ACC has-beens or poker tournaments.

Think about this way...

You have a product to sell but the only way to sell it is through 5-6 stores.

Wouldn't you say screw those stores and sell your product online.

Half of the problem is Comcast, DirecTV, AT&T and the rest of the providers.

Just a smart business decision being made by ESPN.
Just capitalism. Everyone loves capitalism but some complain about how it works.

They are going to control how their product is distributing.
Stream it though your television and you won't even know the difference.

Majority of the problem is Texas and their ***** of horn network. This is the biggest reason Big 12 is on ESPN+ and why there is no Big 12 Network.

Big 12 is on ESPN+ because it makes sense.

People no longer purchase cable and Satellite packages like they have.
So you are attaching yourself to a dying product.

ESPN wants everything behind a paywall and starting with the Big 12 and the SEC they are getting their way.
ESPN+ owns the SEC's first tier rights after the contract with CBS ends. They may end up buying CBS out a year early.

The LHN is what keeps the conference together. Without that a lot of the schools would be in the AAC and Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas would have moved on.

You would be smart to sign up with a streaming service and tell Comcast or whoever to screw off.
