He's got the same problem that Franklin had- and any coach coming here will have. Expectations don't match reality.

The great coaches of the past all won with great players by recruiting great players. The Bear, JoePa, Woody- whoever they ALL recruited the kids they needed to win. They did it on reputation and personality and impressing moms and dads (and maybe a few bucks on the side) Joe stopped winning when he stopped recruiting, not when he got old.

Now getting the kids is all about how much you can pay them, and nothing else matters. Unless and until somebody ponies up enough NIL money to match the Texasses and tOSUs of the world don't expect to run with the big dogs.

It’s all about cash money now, OBVIOUSLY. o_O . Look at dylan raiola. He started at nebby, yet he transferred to oregon this season to play behind dante moore. Yes, moore got hurt last night and raiola came through off the bench, but that isn’t the point. It seems that raiola was lured to oregon by Nike cash money to be the backup.

This is true. It’s not the stadium, it’s the players in the stadium.

I agree, mostly. It wasn't the kids who blew a TO to start the 4th quarter for some mysterious reason. It wasn't the kids who called low percentage passing plays with 8:00 left and a chance to run off precious time. There were some very questionable coaching decisions made.

In the end though, you're right. We have the team that we can afford, I suppose. No DL, few LBs, one play maker (hurt), average RBs, poor OL execution. Multiple receivers had opportunities to make plays and just didn't. Disappointing.

Expectations have never matched reality. I said in a different thread Penn State is a B+ program.

But Campbell is in the same boat as any other HFC who have an NIL war chest of less than OSU, Oregon, Alabama, IU, Notre Dame a small handful of others - you are fighting for the remainder of "the really good, but not exceptional talent" - whether they are recruited or contracted with.

There are still a lot of things that can happen - either good or bad. We will see when the dust settles.

He'll have all the cash he needs...just didn't have time to spend it well this year.

All joking aside, this team needs to go beat Northwestern and much of the hysteria will disappear. Some simply need to re center a bit and realize that every problem didn't exit with the previous coach nor are they likely to be solved by the current one.
There are significant positions with mediocre talent and recruiting isn't trending up. Short of a surge in NIL $ the creme of the portal isn't destined for PSU.

Agree 100%. Lose to NW (again) and I'd expect $hite to hit the fan.

First away game. Not optimistic.

He does? Thought I saw that Penn State is 7th in Big Ten NIL money.
You all keep using a report by the Athletic (I believe) that acknowledges they're guessing
We spent as much as anyone last year it's just not a public because it was internal guys. Allar and Singleton made as much as anyone not names Arch or Livvy Dunne last year.

All of that. I accept apologies.

Why? This just isn't a great team and a lot of the better players are injured. I wouldn't expect a lot more than we saw this Saturday.

Ugh. Don't say that. There once were discussions about perhaps making the playoffs.....

Well in fairness, when Campbell came aboard Grunkenmyer was told flat that Becht would be the starter so Grunk left. That in hindsight appears to be a BIG mistake by Campbell.

No doubt. Absolute budget does not automatically translate to Ws - take a look at aTm; they have quite potentially the largest annual player payroll capability and it has not translated. PSU has a top quartile budget for players in FBS - it's about making good decisions with a finite budget in modern Professional Football wearing college names on their jerseys and Campbell's decision regarding QB is a perfect example of how badly he has squandered the limited, but sufficient, resources he had. Acting like Campbell is at some huge disadvantage relative to all but a handful of teams is ridiculous - everybody outside a handful of teams are facing these same limitations NIL and $$$ have nothing to do with Kraft and Campbell being exposed (Franklin must be laughing his way to the bank.).

Overall talent level compared to tier one peers has been a problem for several years. We are witnessing a program that is stuck in the middle tier of the B1G right now. The uniforms look the same but it is very clear the product on the field is just average at best. Without a single stud RB on the roster this offense is destined for mediocrity or worse in 2026. Very sad times for Penn State football.

IF we spend as much as anyone else, why did we lose all those top recruits to USC, Notre Dame, and Oregon last year (and this year)? Wait, it must have been all the titles they won in the last few years...uh wait, it must be....IT"S ANOUT THE CASH. Even the BW writers say we are not spending with these schools. Please stop. We might have spent close $ for one season with our vets, but that is not what you have to do. You have to spend on your vets AND on recruits the same and every year. We don't do that and the product speaks for itself.

Again...we have to money to so and did so thr prior two years while this year we lost essentially an entire recruiting class and had to spread the money over more players. You also don't spend money just to spend it.
Just because the guys we sign flop doesn't mean we didn't spend money on them. We spent a lot on WRs last year for example in addition to retaining our own talent which unfortunately didn't work at all.
Their report specifically states its not factual but an estimate based on CONVERSATIONS.
