Double digit leads with Beamer

Stole this all from X (haven't vetted, but it sounds accurate).

Since 2023, we have had double digit leads 11 times over SEC teams. We are 6-5 in those games. Seven times we blew the lead (regained and won 2 of them).

Had we won those games in which we had double digit leads, Beamer's resume would look like this:
40-26 (21-19)
5 straight bowls
6 wins vs top 10 teams
1 CFP appearance

I was writing my thread up when you posted. Otherwise I would have added the X post I found to this thread. Bottom line: we always find ways to lose
Yes, he noted that his initial math was based on 10 wins, but then he came across the MSU game that we led, blew the lead and came back to win. Hence the 6-5.

I'm not at all defending Beamer, because those stats look bad to me. But to be a meaningful stat, I think we'd need to see what the same stats are for other SEC teams, especially those not named Georgia or Texas, I guess.

Edit: Also, I'd like to know what the stats are for a 10 point lead at some point in the 2nd half are. 10 points in the first half is really not that big of a deal, but 10 points in the 2nd half is a game you probably should have won.

Does anyone else feel this way during Carolina games? Anytime we grab a massive lead, I don't celebrate | just start stressing out, waiting for the other team to steamroll us.

Instead of thinking,

"Man, we've got this, " I'm stuck thinking,

"F, we're gonna blow this lead." It's like getting PTSD; being a Carolina fan triggers it every time we actually start winning.

Like, if we're up by 32 points against Clemson at halftime, instead of being hyped, I want to turn the TV off just so l don't have to watch us throw it away.

I’m thinking the whole time…. man we are so far ahead we got this. I thinking ‘f**** we are gonna lose’.

It’s like getting PTSD and Carolina trigger it whenever they start winning.
I have certainly found myself hyper being critical of any mistakes we make when playing with a lead. I've seen too much Gamecock football to be any other way. I remember when we kicked the fieldgoal at the end of a spectacular half of football at A&M to go up 31-3. I told my wife "Gee, I really would have liked a TD there." Somehow, you just knew a 28 point lead wasn't enough. That's a shame.

You aren't alone - lots of us are conditioned to feel like that based on our experiences.

It's like the WMU/Cheatagain game - the "powers that be" claim they can't go back and change the outcome, even though they admit WMU won according to the rules. If it was USC instead of Cheatagain, they'd find some way to reverse the outcome. o_O

Yuuuuuuuuup. Drives my wife crazy.

She tells me "This is why I can't stand watching games with you. You're never happy."

Indeed. We picked the ball off with the chance to go up 34-3. Instead it was 30-3, which seems like a minor difference for a non-Gamecock fan. I'm sure all of us were instantly doing the math, though, and came to the same conclusion: we're losing this thing 31-30.

I know you said "not named Georgia or Texas", but I recall seeing a stat at the end of the first half of the UGA/Arkansas game that said something like, Georgia under Kirby is 52-0 when they have a 14 point lead. They were leading 21-3 at the half and won 45-17. I think the stat was about leading by 14 at any time during the game.

I can't find it, but I also saw where we have not overcome a double-digit deficit in SEC play under Beamer (not sure if true, but I'll assume).

So if we're leading by double digits, we have a bit better than a 50% chance of winning.

If we're trailing by double digits, we have a 0% chance of winning.

In 2018 they blew two 14 point leads in the swamp and lost. The defense got an unnecessary roughness penalty on one of the plays where FL took a knee to run out the clock. I remember thinking how great it was that a Muschamp defense finally got fired up at the very end. I knew right then he was done at SC. Took the admin two more seasons to figure that out. They gave him another raise and one year extension after 2018.

It shows an inability to adjust. We get ahead and the opponents make halftime adjustments. But we have no Plan B.

Are you saying Beamer's next job will not be a motivational speaker?
You joke about that. But the last company I worked for sent managers to listen to a motivational speaker who admittedly had gone bankrupt with several companies. So he turned to motivational speaking. He had no ideas, jut motivation to keep doing whatever it is you do. The owner of the company asked what I thought of his program. I said it was a waste of a perfectly good evening. I did get dinner out of it.

2014, we blew two TD leads in the fourth quarter against Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri. I remember being up 21-3 on Florida in 00' or '01 and losing something like 45-21. This is nothing new. It's the Gamecock way.

Have we ever mounted a gigantic COMEBACK rather that a collapse? That is the question.

No opposing coach fears Beamer because he is a lightweight. With Spurrier they had some fear that he could draw up a play and change the game in a minute. As a former position coach with no OC or DC experience Beamer just does not seem to have the X and O skills to make adjustments.

That Florida game was something else, lol. We rocked UF out of the gate. It was kind of flukey, though, with a couple blocked punts returned for TDs, I think. We weren't driving the field for TDs. What I recall, though, is up 21-3 the UF QB, Grossman I think, threw a pass that our defender read perfectly. He jumped the route, full speed, and had a 100% sure thing TD. But he dropped the ball. Spurrier had seen enough. Yanked the QB and replaced him, I think, with Palmer. UF scored 38 unanswered points.

He did succeed in motivating the owner to pay him to speak which was the ultimate goal.

Alot of nothingness can be masked by presentation. It’s how politicians have always operated and how most marriages form.

But his coordinators should. But especially with the first 3 OC’s they were not useful coordinators. And White seems to get alot of love but I don’t really get it. He’s had one solid defense here and the rest have been average at best. The best one he had was 2024 which was highly experienced with many seniors and they hit very well with the portal. But when he needed to out scheme and not just out talent it didn’t go so well. LSU and Missouri of that season come to mind. And officiating aside in that LSU game, our defense still blew a 17 point lead.

If you want to relive some Gamecock luck:

Here is the point in the game, with us up 21-3, that a pass bounces off the defender and right into the hands of the UF receiver for a 40 yard completion, setting up their first TD:

Here's the pass I was thinking of. It was actually Palmer's first series. Would have been guaranteed 7, had the defender held onto it:
