anyone read Dreamland yet? Book by Sam Quinones about the painkiller turned heroin addiction. Uses Portsmouth, OH as central character and how it affects the whole area.

Good read so far. As someone who has seen friends and family die from OD and spend time in prison because of this it is an eye opening look at the addiction.

I feel for them but it always, for me anyway, goes back to that first time. If you never take it the first time you can't get addicted.

That doesn't explain the aggressive marketing, and over-prescribing of the stuff. Not any different than any greedy monopoly. It's fn sick.

The "first time" is often prescribed for legitimate reasons, to good/successful people. I've long been torn on the issue, but after dealing with it close to home, my opinion has changed like many.

Wasn't aware of the book, but will give it a look.

It's an epidemic, for certain. I don't know of anyone who hasn't been affected somehow at this point, whether through friends, family, etc. If you haven't, consider yourself blessed and on the clock...it's incredible.

True but it's the "first time" recreationally that I meant. I should have been more specific.

Many people get hooked on whatever opioid they were prescribed, and at some point can no longer afford to support their new & unintended addiction -- heroin is the cheaper and easily available alternative, so "recreation" isn't the right word, at least for many.

It's definitely hard to fathom why anyone would resort to that route, but drugs/addiction make people do weird and unbelievable things.

Trust me I know all that and opioids are hell of a drug. But I've watched too many people I know die and go to jail who never had an injury.
