Say what you want about the old guys but Buddy Rich was one of the best.

Say what you will about Dave Matthews Band, but Carter Beauford is a hell of a drummer. He'd make my list.

I hate Rush with every fiber of my being, but I can't deny Pert's ability.

One of my favorites not mentioned, Levon Helm. Decent drummer but I always thought it was cool he did vocals too.

1. Carter Beauford - DMB
1A. Jon Fishman - Phish
2. Danny Carey - Tool
3. Chad Sexton - 311

* Lars Ulrich is the most overrated drummer of all time! He's nowhere near the level as these guys mentioned above or below. *

Honorable Mentions...Mike Portnoy, Neil Peart, John Bonham

If he's good enough to play for Jesus, he's good enough to top my list...

Brann Dailor
Thomas Haake
Blake Richardson
Gene "The Atomic Clock" Hoglan
Mario Duplantier
Dirk Verbeuren
Thomas Pridgen
Dave Elitch

Are some metal/rock guys with great feel and jazz/hybrid infusion.

Thomas Lang
Neil Peart
MIke Portnoy

Scientists with sticks. Unreal conceptual drumming, the drum is more than a percussive instrument.

Lars is trash and Metallica should have kicked him when they had a chance.

My personal (all time) top 3 is currently:

Richardson
Duplantier
Jon Theodore (his work with The Mars Volta was insane)

Not the best...just three who could play rings around any rock drummer without breaking a sweat...

Buddy Rich

Billy Cobham

Dave Weckl

Learn jazz.

If we're going to pull the jazz guys in, it's time to show the session guys like Bernard "Pretty" Purdie and Steve Gadd some love too.

I'm just going to throw rick allen in there since he has one damn arm and still has a job as a drummer. Masterbating must be a *****

Way to many styles to list just three.

So just my favorite two.

Hired Gun, versatility and breadth of work
  • Kenny Aronoff

In the Pocket
  • Brian Dunne
