Get out to the DBAP if you can locals for ACC Baseball Tourney. Coach Chris Pollard has this team fighting thru adversity, and has really rebuilt this program in a fashion similar to Blue Devil fb coach David Cutcliffe. Duke Baseball like Duke FB, is nothing to laugh at anymore-

Hart:
I'm certain you know that Leo Hart played baseball as well as football at Duke. Got me thinking: we had a lot of two sport athletes on the late '60s baseball teams, including Leo and Larry Davis and Bob Morris from football (to name just a few) and Tim Teer from basketball. Heck, we even has an assistant football coach as an assistant baseball coach! (John Gutekunst). Guess those days are gone, my friend.

One has to believe that they are safely in with another victory in the ACC Tournament.

BILLIE A WIN OVER Ga Tech Friday should do it, but is huge task- they took two of three from us two weeks ago in Durham...They're like a top 10 team....OFC

Never know about postseason baseball! Both teams could get in a slugfest that Norte Dame wins and then Duke could be sitting pretty to advance to the semifinals on Saturday even with a loss to Georgia Tech. Duke controls its own destiny you could say!

Dont know if you recall, but reserve guard on the hoops team (and mistake prone) Steve Gray even played a little SS at Duke in 70s.

jim spanarkel threw a three hitter against maryland

Spanarkel came to Duke in large part because Bill Foster told him he would let him play baseball.

Remember Quinton McCracken? DB for Steve Spurrier, baseball star, long MLB career. He's currently a coach with the Durham Bulls.

Back in the old days, before sports became more specialized, Duke (and other schools) had lots of multi-sports stars, Dick Groat, Bill Weber, Ace Parker, George McAfee, Eric Tipton, Gordon Carver, Bob Gantt, Ed Koffenberger, Dave Sime, many, many more. Bobby Brower went from Duke running back to MLB outfielder. Don Altman quarterbacked Duke in the 1960/61 Cotton Bowl and a few months later pitched for Duke in the College World Series.

It's a lot harder to do these days. Johnathan Lloyd played a full season of baseball at Duke but dropped the sport early in his sophomore season. Too much overlap with fall baseball and spring football hurt his development in both sports and on the diamond he was competing against guys who played baseball at a high level for 12 months a year, which he could not do.

David Cutcliffe has had several players run track at Duke. McDuffie comes immediately to mind.Havent chronicled it like you Jim Summer, let me know.I think some of Cut's boys actually had a relay team one year.

Btw you mentioned McCracken....Was Q the guilty party on the 43-43 tie at State on according to Spurrier "the worst call in the history of Duke football!!!" Controversial defensive holding call that enabled Damon Hartman to hit a game tying FG to knock us out of a bowl. Or was it someone else? OFC

I seem to recall that Erwin Sampson was the alleged culprit.

And yes, several of Cut's players have run sprints at Duke. But he doesn't want his linemen to throw discus, put the shot, etc. He thinks it interferes with their weight-training regimen.

Anthony Boone was a very good high-school baseball player. I asked him once if he missed baseball. His reply? "Every day." But he thought Duke football deserved his full attention, so he never played baseball at Duke.

Marcus Jones played baseball one year at Duke, his final spring after his football eligibility had ended. He was a DH.

MANY THANKS JIM....Lot of good info. The call at State still stings 31years later....Good story on "Ace" Boone, didnt know of his baseball prowess. Seem to remember Marcus Jones as a qb prospect. OFC
