I think part of it has to do with that Alabama and Clemson are more regionalized to where majority of the country may not care to Duke and Wisconsin were spread out. That's just a thought on it.
It helped that nothing else was going on at the time. We had the whole market. Also, no one wants to tune in for a 4.5 hour commercial fest. College basketball is just better that way.
Also, I imagine some folks tuned in when Duke was down 10+ to see us lose, but instead saw Grayson's heroics and were hooked.

To be honest, I think college football has lost a little bit of its luster. "We need a playoff system," they said. Well, so far I wouldn't give it anything more than a C-grade.
When Duke is playing it helps ratings. That's been proven time and time again. A lot of people love Duke and a lot of people hate them. Those are the two main reasons people tune in.
