Well it went about as expected for much of this game, but Duke lost energy down the stretch. Kudos to FSU who certainly looks like the class of the ACC with UNC. There are factors here regarding Duke's performance, but no excuses. There are some issues that need to be ironed out if this team is to hit their true ceiling.

We'll discuss that here. By January there only a few things you can fix. What 2 items would you like to see addressed that would potentially get this team into the Final Four?

Play more zone defense . They cannot pressure the other guards when teams spread the court.
It just leads to open layups .
Play less like Kentucky and more like teams like Gonzaga & Butler.

I think Capel did a horrendous coaching job tonight...

1) Continually beat for layups and rebounds..so went small with Tatum at the five

2) Took the ball out of Grayson's hands and ran it through Tatum who is a complete hot mess

3) going away from the zone when it worked so well in the first half...

Have to play together as a team, both offensively, and defensively. We look like a bunch of pick-up players who haven't played together.

We still have time, but it's slipping away.

Hoping by tourney time our freshman can have enough college basketball experience to be the players we recruited. Right now they are way behind in many parts of the game such as defense, decisions, composure , the pace of the game, playing against equal or better players than themselves and just maturity. The injuries have indeed set them back further than I thought. They need to keep playing and take those lumps and bumps. I know they will not be back next year and hope they grow up quick because their talent added to some maturity can win us a title. Will just have to wait and see and not give up. I can't give up. I'm a Duke fan. I think we will win every game and of course I'm wrong but I can't help it. It's my nature. OFC

Yep, so many setbacks this year, Sky. I do believe this team is going to be very, very good by the end of the season...but, if they don't come together quickly enough then we're not going to acquire a high seed.

Thought a huge point in the game was when we were up 50-48 (our last lead) and got a steal, Luke stumbled and threw a crazy pass to Jayson who got called for a questionable walk (should of been an easy 2.) Would have put us up 4. Instead FSU went on a 10-0 run, game over from there.

This isn't a knock on Capel what so ever..... But we miss a healthy K, bottom line. The more I see this collection of guys ( not worthy of being called a team yet) the more I realize they are being cheated in multiple ways. It's the way the ball bounces in life tho. All goals are still within realistic reach, not panic time yet. I'm frustrated and disappointed, yet damn glad to be a Dukie!!!

There is probably something I don't know, but I just can't fathom how Giles get 10 minutes and Jeter gets 25. Is Giles still that far away health-wise? He has looked like he is making progress. He might not be ready for "full time," but to get just 10 minutes in a game like this seems completely explainable to me.

That was definitely the game changer. But stuff happens, and you have to suck it up. Unfortunately we didn't suck it up afterwards, we just sucked.

Zone could really change this team's life. Poor man D was the demise of the Jabari team and Austin team. This team is made up of a bunch of offensive players. Grayson recruited for offense, Matt recruited for shooting, Jayson offense, Harry primarily offense, Frank offensive dynamo in high school, Chase recruited for his great potential on O and a nice touch around the basket, Luke best scorer in Ohio.

Amile truly is the only do the grimy work type of player that was recruited for THIS team. Javin could help, but for some reason the staff has no faith in him. Same with A.V. who has proven that he can help give this team toughness, rebounding and some measure of defense down low, especially in the zone. It's about time for the zone more often IMO. But I'm certainly not the coach and they know better with this team.

I understand Harry's situation and not being in the best of shape still. But he is MILES behind on defense, he gives zero help and zero rim protection.

Let's assume Grayson, Giles, Tatum leave this year, who would you have next year with returners and incoming freshman?

I know it is not entirely FSU related, but I was curious what your lineup would look like. I do not know your entire class and know it is not done yet.

Something like

Jackson - ?????
Kennard - ???????
????? - ?????
Carter - Delaurier
Bolden - Jeter

I am under the impression Bolden really wants to be OAD and maybe Jackson also. But; was curious how your lineup would look if they returned.

Absolutely hate getting into this so early in what was supposed to be a dream season. But Luke has skyrocketed all the way to top 20 on most mock drafts....

Exactly... kept his player of year candidate on the bench and tried to rely on Freshman in their biggest ACC game on the road this year. He should have demanded Grayson go out there and lead. Road losses in the ACC dont matter and losing can be the best thing that happens to you. You use them to grow, but not when you run and hide. So disappointed in K and Cappell in the way they have handled Garyson. They have cut his balls off and he may never be the same. Also Bolden had one foul this game. Amile is hurt and your playing a team whose bigs couldn't spell the word free throw and your 1 disposable big has 1 foul and 4 minutes. Here is a new flash Cappell your freshman dont know how to play team basketball yet and asking them to lead at this point and telling your POY candidate to take a back seat is why you will never be the head coach at Duke.

You can just tell in his gait that he isn't quite there yet.

Just a shame that with 6 recruited post players on this team, those 25 minutes can't be trusted to anyone else but Chase, who was obviously over matched.

I understand the frustration with tonight's game, but it went basically how I expected. FSU is REALLY good. With Amile, I obviously think we put up a better fight tonight. My outlook on the team still remains very high assuming Amile is able to come back soon healthy. It's going to be really tough for us moving forward without him though. I still think we beat Louisville this weekend.

Honestly, I expected the loss. What bothers me is the fact that for whatever reason, they decided that passing the ball to Jeter during a stretch where Duke had some momentum was a good idea despite never having success doing it. I like Jeter on defense, but I would almost rather go 4 on 5 on offense sometimes.

Tatum is going to be one of those players that ends up with a bunch of points, but brings nothing to the overall success of the team. At least that's what it looks like right now. There is still time.

I liked the team's fight for 27 minutes of the game. They went up against a really good FSU team on the road and could have won with a few plays going the other way. I didn't like how they seemed to be okay with Tatum taking over the offense. As good of a scorer that he is, he should not run the offense at all, because it stops as soon as he has the ball. I know I sound critical, but I am sick and in a bad mood. Sorry for the rant.

Go Duke!

I tried to defend Capel in the first half, but he was a deer in headlights in the second, much like Dennis Hopper's character in Hoosiers.

I want to see more Grayson and Kennard and less Tatum. Watching the Elon game, I could tell he had the whole offense out of sorts with his 22 shots. And I want to see Bolden grow a pair and act like he wants to be here.

I don't know that he does anymore. Definitely doesn't act like it anyway.

1.) Help defense. Obviously I would love for our on ball defense to improve, but with a backcourt of Grayson and Luke, I don't ever see it becoming a strength. We need improved team defense to make up it.

2.) Our bigs to show why they were so highly touted coming out of high school.

1 - play the players who represent the front of the jersey with a passion vs the name on the back (i'll take less talent for more effort)
2 - Leadership - someone rise up and lead the team...dont care what class they are from...just lead!

If anyone is in Louisville Saturday feel free to have my tickets.
Can't stand to watch Luke and Grayson get beat constantly off the bounce. Jayson turn the ball over and not get back. Harry look clueless on defense. Matt do absolutely nothing except the occasional 3. Frank look like a scared freshman. Chase get blocked on every dunk attempt. And Bolden not play.

I would seriously consider not over extending the defense on Saturday against Louisville. Make them make a few jumpers....it's something they haven't been able to do all season.

I was disappointed in Tatum tonight. It's the worst he's looked all season, IMO....and that comes in a game where he actually did some really nice things too. He was embarrassingly bad the second half.

Grayson, Luke and Matt need to bring these guys together. I just feel like there's a disconnect with the veterans and young guys right now.

Mental toughness is lacking. I know things were really bad the last 10 minutes, but before that we were right there and this game was slowly trending in our direction --- so it seemed. When things go bad for these guys right now they go really bad. Grayson forced some fast breaks and made stupid passes, Jayson tried to do everything by himself, we gambled on defense and allowed layup after layup after layup....you get the point.

Three years ago, during Jabari's freshmen season, is what I see right now. A team that can't get stops when they must and a team that just folds in the moment. It's frustrating.

Do you think zone is a cure for item 1, maybe even item 2? They just look like they have to think too much out there right now.

There is some serious truth to the disconnect between then the vets and the freshmen (other than Frank, Jav and Jack) and it seemingly developed during the injury stretch.

Definitely wouldn't hurt to give it a shot! We've got to figure out something... This team may lack a lot of things at this point in the season, but length is not one of them. That would be very beneficial for the zone's effectiveness.

Pack Line...I don't know why we don't use it...we are big and long and athletic...just can't stop dribble penetration..

We used it with the 2010 team..and it was the last time...

It's against the entire program philosophy...so we pay the price year after year...

It also limits the amount of switching/help that's needed that the freshmen can't seem to grasp...much simpler and easier to help and recover from...

Can look at zone on saturday 2 different ways. Louisville is a horrible offensive team. They can't shoot very well, like always. So we can zone and pray they miss threes.
But what if they hit 3 threes in a row early, and that place goes wild? Cause that's bound to happen with how simple our 2/3 zone is.

Not looking long ago I thought the Jabari team comparison was quite Dumb. But the way Jay layed it out... It's quite accurate. Failure to make the timely, easy play. Untimely turnovers. And then total melt downs when getting punched in the mouth. When I type that, it sure sounds like a leadership issue. And it might be. But tonight looked like a youth problem. Youth on that court and youth on the bench. Capel tryed to ISO Tatum multiple times, with very poor results. He didn't have the calming effect we needed. But to be fair K hasn't had that for a bit either. We need to use the damn timeouts!!!

I'm just not sure where we go moving ahead. When K is healthy and on the sidelines, you put these losses to bed and just KNOW he's going to make THAT adjustment moving ahead in times like this. I'm just afraid K doesn't have the answer for this mess YET,

Like I've said, I'm far from giving it up!!!

FSU is very good. They played a great game. Nonetheless this is supposed to be the most talented team in the country. I understand it'll take time for this team to gel but this lack of defense we've been playing from day 1 is extremely concerning at this point. Seems like there's too many guys worried about getting buckets/stats and not about getting stops. Also our guards just aren't athletic enough to stay in front of anyone decent. I feel like K wouldn't have made much of a difference tonight.
