Ugly in the end, but a W is a W, and lord knows, we needed that! I usually don't like to even talk about the referee's, but man, a couple of phantom fouls on Chase, and Grayson was mauled, pawed, and clawed the whole game, and he fouls out?!! These officials had me in a "stratosphere of pissed off" I haven't been in for a long time!
I didn't see or know what happened with Grayson and Derryck, but if Grayson did shove him, I would say most of that was from the frustration of him being mauled the whole game.
Anyway, hope this spurs these kids on to greater things, because they are still a very dangerous team, and I am damn proud of them for battling back!
Go Duke!!

I didn't see the exchange where everyone says Grayson shoved Derryck and also supposedly told him to stfu but if it happened then I believe it was probably just out of frustration from fouling out on some bad calls rather than anything to do with Derryck. I think some people are just trying to make more of a big deal out of it than it was/is

IT wasn't that big of a deal, it was just randomly caught on live TV. It's a simple conversation. "Derryck, you better play better at the end of games to get in the face of another player about their play".

I thought I saw him say something about "stop fouling", but I could be wrong. I would expect that reaction as allen didn't foul. With that said, no need to be up so close to a player. If I was allen with all the terrible fouls and other calls going on it would have taken all I had to not get T'd up.

Derryck must have gotten in Allens face on another sequence because he simply patted Grayson on the chest and Grayson went off.....

Yeah, in the heat of battle, these things will happen on any team. With so much youth and so much pressure on them right now, they did, and have done, a good job of staying together. Really love both of those kids and I am sure they will work it out.
Go Duke!!

There have been worse things I've seen from teammates. I don't mind a little fire with this team. They need it. I also noticed in the closing seconds how Matt gave a big fist pump....these kids are learning how to win all over at this level. They know what it's going to take.

The first half of games Duke doesn't need to play zone! The frustration of not having intensity in the beginning of the game was bothering me. But all kudos to coach Capel for going man 2 man it really seemed to ignite a more aggressive Duke team in the 2nd half. Players began to make it personal to stop there man from scoring and that was the difference in the game. Needed the win big time excited about the growth of this team, because there are glimpses of this team being capable of beating anyone if they play some Defense for 40mins..

That might be true, or duke might be playing zone in the first half to make sure they stay out of foul trouble. If they're not in foul trouble to start the 2nd half they really need to play aggressive man like they did vs GTech and create some tough shots and turnovers. Duke in zone has their fingers crossed easy shots don't fall.

The first half I was disgusted with our defense. Awful.

The second half I was very proud of our defense, except the last two minutes. Awesome.

I also never talk about it, but good grief the refs were bad.

I think they are playing zone to stay out of foul trouble and it is a good game plan. The second half is the most important and it is hard to play hard man to man with foul trouble. I thought the game plan was excellent. I liked the fact Jeter and some other players got to play thru some mistakes and let Plumlee rest. A team with a deep bench is still going to give us fits.

Honestly, I think it's just the style of defense. Without Amile, this team is not well-suited to play zone; as we're way too small at the 1-3 spots to really be disruptive on the perimeter and don't have much backline shotblocking when it's just Plumlee back there. The problem, though, is we lost a bunch of games early in the ACC schedule b/c playing man defense exposes us to significant foul trouble. With the group we have, the zone defense IMO is just designed to effectively shorten the game to give us a chance to hopefully try and win the game in the 2nd half. That strategy works against teams like State and Tech; but doesn't work against a good team like Miami. Nonetheless, I don't think our first half defense is anything to get worked up about. It is what it is until we get Amile back -- who is not only a good defender, but lets us play more man b/c it significantly reapportions the minutes and limit our exposure to foul trouble -- i.e., it's pretty difficult for a big like Marshall to play 40 minutes of effective man without getting into serious foul trouble; but it is possible to play 25 minutes of effective man if he can substituted out of the lineup.

I liked Capel's gameplan and adjustments overall. I think he used the subs very well. What concerns me about Capel is that look on his face when we started giving it away near the end. He gets emotional in the moment and just starts clapping and yelling, "Let's go!" K manages the panic moments better. He brings a calm to a frantic team. I'm not sure Capel is great at that. He seemed pretty great at everything else though. K + Capel = titles. Maybe Stevens + Capel would be similar.

I also really like the adjustment of having ingram bring the ball down the court when Thornton is not in. He's much more natural at it than Allen or Jones and he'll be doing it some next year. Some will probably wonder if it had an impact on his poor shooting, but I don't think so. I just think he missed some easish shots he normally makes.

the zone w/ brandon at the top takes away his rebounding and shot blocking abilities and the paint to plumlee and a guard....i just dont think he causes that much of a disruption....it does preserve him from a fouling standpoint, but.....

Really liked the way we came out 2nd half,as it reminded me of the manner we took charge in Raleigh couple weeks ago!

My thought too + zone is an easier (physically) defense. If we can keep it close in the first half with zone that may be the best way to go.

I do agree that the zone may be a way to keep players out of foul trouble and also rest players with a short bench. Just hate seeing teams get lays on the zone because of lack of communication of just intensity. Some of the players look disinterested and not as aggressive and may effect theor rhythm in the game. Ingram was more aggressive blocking shots, rebounding, and attacking the paint in the 2nd half instead of settling for 3s, it seems that the man 2 man turned the switch on for the team to play harder. Hoping to see more D against NC state against cat.

What erks me the most about our zone is that as the game progresses (and we get tired) everyone has their hands down. IMO to run an effective zone you must have your hands up/out and clog the passing lanes. Tech far too often made entry passes from the top of the key into the post in the first half for easy layups.

Jeffrey I love Jones natural ability- the kid makes things look easy....Sirk is much more of a self-made player, not to take anything away from him. Also I still think what PB did in Charlottesville late in the contest was phenomenal, and he cant be overlooked one iota!

Still, at the end of the day knowing Cut's ways, I bet Sirk comes out no 1 headed into fall camp.I just wonder if he falls back MORE on the two headed qb attack we used in years past...He's hinting Scott Bracey may get looks in wildcat!

Agree on how Capel approached the game. While it made for a rough first half, the zone keep everyone relatively rested and out of foul trouble so we could play more intense man defense during that crucial stretch in the second half. I hope we see more of that.
