noticed your neat collection of military firearms.....here's one for you. I was born in Logan. My grandparents were good friends with Devil Anse Hatfield's daughter Rosie. She and my grandmother had their purses stolen while walking to town one evening... My grandfather grabbed a rifle that was inside the Hatfield's front door...and as my grandmother used to say.."convinced" the robber to give up the purses and wait for the cops. When they returned to the house Rosie Hatfield gave my grandfather the rifle, and she told him that it was Devil Anse's personal hunting rifle, but was never used against anyone in the feud. The reason she wanted the purse back so badly is her dad's pistol was in it and she greatly valued it. The Honey in the Rock museum at Beckley offered my dad 5 grand for the rifle back in the 70's and he laughed at them. My brother and I own it now. I cannot confirm this but have been told the the purse and the pistol are in the state archives in Charleston and put on display now and then. Devil Anse's great grandson Coleman C Hatfield helped my dad and grandad get my mom to Logan General Hospital in 3 feet of snow the day I was born.....hence the name SSB. He also wrote the book " The Tale of the Devil", which is the definitive story of the feud, told to him by the participants themselves...It's a good read if you are so inclined
