Likewise for me as a visit to the Meuse-Argonne cemetery in France. I was active duty at the time and we were humbled with the privilege of raising the American flag over the grounds.

Was considering visiting the WW2 museum down in NOLA when I found that they had a research service. My stepfather was a WW2 vet, served in the USN on an LCT, second wave Normandy. Of his 3 other brothers 2 other also served, one on the Essex carrier and another flew a Hellcat. He spoke a bit about his experiences, but nothing at length. My mother mentioned him having to swim out of a capsized LCT. Anyways when I found that they offered research services I submitted a request. They found his records and I'm actually waiting for the package to arrive in the next week or two. Good timing considering Memorial Day. Quite a remarkable generation.

This is my uncle Larry. He was seriously wounded in the invasion of Normandy and later succumbed to lingering infection from shrapnel wounds in the Naval Hospital in Philly in April 1946.

He left behind his wife and two very young sons. His widow then had to go to work in the textile mills around Bangor Pa, and "day care" for the boys was handled by my great grandparents and two aunts. My grandfather and others in the extended family made sure the boys had an appropriate level of male influence and guidance while growing up. Both ended up fine and are now retired after successful careers.

My Aunt Jennie, who never remarried, was reunited with him 60 years later at the age of 90.

The second pic is my Aunt Alba with the two boys shortly after his death. Alba passed away in 2021, two months shy of her 101st birthday.
