EAST ST. LOUIS
After watching his Lincoln-Way West football team fall to top-ranked East St. Louis on Saturday in a first-round Class 7A game, Warriors coach Dave Ernst was asked to compare the Flyers to other top suburban football programs.

Ernst didn’t hesitate.

“Before today I thought (Homewood-Flossmoor) was the best team I’ve seen and best we’ve played. But after today, I would say that East St. Louis is right with them,” Ernst said. “That’s a very good football team.”

Wow, tough matchups for the Glenbards. GW gets HF and GN gets ESL but if you want to be the best you have to beat the best. Do either of them have a chance?

I hope they stream both games. Crazy round two matchups for both. I believe the GBN/ESL winner will be in the finals and will probably win the 7A title. Bradley or Fenwick will probably emerge from the other side of the bracket and beg to differ with me. Big big game for ESL/GBN.

8A - throw a dart - that division is absolutely nuts regarding how many good teams in it and anyone can beat anyone from here on out.

GBN vs. ESL
GBW vs. H-F

These have to be two of the most intriguing matchups in Round 2. GBN would seem to have the speed in the defensive backfield to compete with ESL. Can the ESL defense continue its stellar play and limit Tricase? Can GBN overcome the long trip to ESL? GBN seems to be playing as well as anyone right now. It's too bad this is a 2nd Round game, because these could be the two best teams in 7A (said that when the brackets came out and still believe it). Have to like the Flyers chances in ESL.

The big question in the GBW / H-F matchup: how much of an impact will Duchon have on the game? It's a distinct home field advantage for the Hitters.....probably as much as any home field. Will the surface help to neutralize H-F's speed? What will be the condition of the field? How will H-F adjust? I still like H-F in this matchup, although they'd be much more prohibitive favorites at home.

Crazy crazy round 2 matchup between GBN/ESL. Being a flyer fan for life my only concern will be ESL secondary against the stellar wideouts for GBN. ESL plays man coverage and has little experience playing zone defense. Relying heavily on the defense line to keep pressure on the QB....I'm not having a good feeling about this game. How good is GBN QB? Does GBN have any weaknesses?

GBN is a run first team but their QB can throw it well (I think he is a 3 year starter?) and they have nice WRs in addition to Jace James. Their back 7 on D is very good (some of the same guys that are on offense as WRs). I don't know a lot about ESL except for they have been rolling nearly everyone they played and they beat two fantastic teams in the two games that were actually contested games.

This should be a fantastic game and in my opinion the Winner of this game will be in the finals thanksgiving weekend.

I'm with you ...I am thinking this game might be decided by the GBN Oline vs ESL Dline and the ESL Oline vs GBN Dline as both teams have fantastic skills guys all over the place that might offset each other.

I love GN and feel like they will give ESL a great game. Not sure ESL has seen a power running game like North has but I only saw a couple ESL games. Before the LWW game I had GN beating ESL in my brackets. If I had to pick now, I might flip that pick.

GW will do their best to hang with Homer Flosswood's studs. Early Massey line is HF -7. I'll take the points and hope my boys can stay in the game. I will say that with Samuta back playing like an all-state LB for GW really helps. That kid makes so many plays. Not looking forward to watching the HF film. Ugh

No fair ;). You have to post some of ESL highlights against the mizzu team and Edwardsville as well:D

The WV GBN game was a crazy game. Tricase ran for 250 yards and 4 TDs on WV and they still lost (the wheels fell off for GBN in the 4th quarter) If you want to see how dangerous GBN can be in the passing game... the CSN game replay vs Neuqua Valley would be the one to watch.

Not too worried about the defense. they can and hold their own. The offensive line has to block .

Yes the OLine has to block. Our running game has not been great this year but it's decent. I believe we are spoiled from our Damien Nash, Courtney Molton, Tony Pierson days....

ESL V EVILLE

Jeff Thomas and AJ Espensa

I'm actually watching this game over right now. I was at this game. ESL gave up a big play in the first 3 minutes of the game. It was in result of ESL playing man coverage. Missed tackle by a ESL CB and the receiver goes for 60 yards. What's very interesting, ESL called and all out blitz in the 4th with 4 minutes remaining. Eville has the ball on 3rd down, 18 yards to go....if this play works, Eville goes up 17-14 with 4 minutes left...with a stagnant ESL offense, this could have been a very different outcome.....Edwardsville has a good well coached team...

I will say I saw a GBN db get beat by a white boy ... I'm not sure that happens to ESL.

To be fair:... #15 probably runs a 4.5 forty so he is no slouch on the speed front (he plays baseball or he would be on the WV four by 100 team in track). And GBN was pinching up and loading the box all game and then WV started play action over the top cuz the running game wasn't doing much. GBN DBs got caught playing run when it was pass.

ESL/GBN should be the game of the week next week. Maybe Edgy will make a trip down to East St. Louis. Might be the best game since 2008 flyers vs St. Rita. Or should I say 'THE BLACK CAT' vs St. Rita.....ESL was down 28-7 at the half and won the game 34-28....Terry Hawthorn was a man amongst boys. Spectacular performance.

I agree it's the best game, but it takes Edgy away from the epicenter of the 20 other big school games up here. Unless someone gets him a private flight in/out of Parks, probably won't happen.

I don't know much at all about ESL but checked their roster and they don't appear to have much length in their receiving corps, GBN's losses included a few big plays to 6'4" Robinson/WV and 6'5" TE for NN. The Panthers are playing better right now than earlier in the year and have been lucky so far to avoid any key injuries. Conway had picks in the WV and NN game (2 in each game I believe?) or they could be 10-0 right now also. He looked really good in the NV game, the 82 yd pass to James was one of the best pass plays I've seen by GBN on Weber Field (10 years). Why talking about passing? We all know GBN can run the ball, the O-line has come together and Tricase is now THE MAN after playing all of his 4 yrs at GBN. Conway played some games as a soph when Gasiorowski was hurt or struggled but his passing will be critical for GBN to play another week. He's a good runner also and has picked up some good gains when scrambling, he looks ready and reminds me of Brian Murphy when they went to State in 2012. Defense seems to be playing better also but a little hard to judge because of the quality of opponents at the end of the year (excluding NV of course). DVC teams have had some success against ESL (I know WWS beat them a couple times?) so hoping they can pull it off, GO PANTHERS!!

ESL is the real deal. GBN isn't far from it either. This should be a great game, I think the winner represents their side of the bracket in 7A. Taking ESL right now...too much to handle.
