East Surry and QB Stephen Gosnell looked pretty impressive last night. The Cardinals seem headed for a great season. I was impressed with their speed on defense.

I was high on Gosnell after seeing him in pre season, even touting him as possibly being the best qb our area has seen. He’s 6-3 with a set of wheels under him and a cannon of a arm. He’s drawing a lot of interest from several schools . Only a junior . Laid out perfect for the next level. Got a lot of weapons around him to. Cards could make serious noise come play off time

The Cardinals have a ton of weapons on offense. Very good receivers, a very good tight end, and a good running back. I’ve been very impressed with the defense as well. This team is having a lot of fun playing together.

Judging by the first two games from them and mount airy, they should be the favorites. But they usually choke on that last game and with it being in mount airy I'd still pick the bears.
Mt.Airy is the king of the NW1A until proven otherwise. East Surry does however have the athletes to hang with MA. Barring injuries to either team, it should be a great showdown at the end of the regular season.

I wonder what the head to head record between MA and ES is over the past 10 years. I know ES has won quite a few. I’m not saying over half, but judging by your post, probably more than people think. ES was conference champs in 14, 15: and 16. MA airy came from behind to win last year and win the conference.

Not taking anything away from Mount Airy's success, because they have been a top program in the area for as long as I can remember, but I'd like to have seen how they would have faired in a conference that was worth a crap over the last few years. After non conference play they have one game in which they have to worry about. Obviously East Surry is in the same boat. It's just a travesty 2 of the better area teams are stuck in such a bad conference for football.

East has been an area power with the Bears for as long as I’ve been alive, the Bears just seem to find another gear come playoff time, gonna be interesting to see if this carries forward with new coaching staffs. As far as schedule goes I’m caught in between on that, you take West Stokes , North Surry , East Surry and the Bears for east , they are big time rival games for the 2 , usually doesn’t matter who has what you gonna get pushed to the max, I mean west stokes has a coaching staff that won a 2aa state title . They gonna push you on the field and the sideline year in and year out, then throw the rival aspect on top of that , it’s a test . East plays Ragsdale, that ain’t to shabby. Second when you are only dressing 29 to 32 players year in and year out then you need to stay healthy for the playoffs. Can’t afford any injuries. For this young bear squad I think the schedule plays to there favor this year, gives the young Bears time to work out the kinks , team to gel and mature under new coaches and offensive schemes. Exspecially the line . Got a sophomore qb that’s breaking records behind a o line that hasn’t ever played a snap together, I would say by seasons end this schedule will be the best thing that ever happened to this granite bear squad. East on the other hand is rolling, ragsdale will test them plenty. Gonna be a good one at the end of the year for these two. Gonna be fun to watch it all come together, that’s my take.

Since 2007, MA and ES have played each other 13 times (2013 and 2016 they played twice. once in regular season and once in playoffs). MA has won 9 of the games for seven conference titles (07,08,09,10,12,13,17) and ES has won 4 of the games for three conference titles (14,15,16). West Stokes won the conference title in 2011. ES knocked MA out of the playoffs in 13, a year when MA beat ES for the conference title and MA beat ES out of the playoffs in 16, a year when ES upset MA for the conference title.

Saw your post and thought I would fill ya in. Probably will be playing for another conference title at the end of the season.

Thanks. I thought it was something like that. I especially remember both of those playoff games you mentioned.

MA, East Surry and Walkertown all tied for the NW title in 2016 after East Surry upset 10-0 Mount Airy in the regular-season finale that season. Walkertown lost to MA but beat ES earlier in the season.

A number of the ES kids I've spoken to have told me that game was the highlight of their playing careers for the Cardinals. I think the Simmons Ratings favored MA to win by 29 points.

Probably a pretty good chance this year that, like in '16, MA and ES will rematch in the playoffs at some point.
