Those #s are frightening at the glance but there are a couple of factors that were not mentioned.

1. All the "participants" were old old old and played when Ignazio's helmet from his profile pic was the latest in safety gear.

2. It seems generally the higher level you play the greater risk you have for CTE. The guys that only played high school had a much lower rate of diagnosis and the ones that did show signs - they indicate it was mild. Moving along to college and pro and nearly everyone showing signs. Is that due to the harder hits or the longer longevity of playing? I don't think they know.

I would like to see the study in 50 years with today's latest gear, non head leading tackling techniques and concussion protocols.

I don't doubt that there is connection between football and CTE but these studies are useless unless since there is no context to them. What is the rate of CTE in the general public? What is the rate of CTE among athletes in other sports?

Lastly If they are only studying the brains of volunteers isn't it safe to assume people who are having problems and are more likely to donate their brain vs someone with no symptoms at all? A lot of these studies are half assed and designed to grab headlines.

Is it half assed or is it simply the available information. Obviously the questions you pose are extremely important and I would assume the people conducting the studies are on their way to addressing them.

Interesting article in today's Sun-Times written by Rick Telander.

My opinion is, anyone who thinks this isn't a growing problem has his or her head in the sand. It's a problem especially for football players. But, with that said, I am willing to see more studies that present further facts.

The bottom line now is, these kids know what the risks are and have a far more info than the last generation did.
