Thoughts? On the tastefulness of the article, not on Grayson.

I am a UK fan that lives in his hometown, Jacksonville, FL, and I do not particularly care for Allen. ONLY because he is very talented and plays for a rival. I don't have anything against him, have any hatred towards him, nor do I not wish him well. If he played for my team I know I would embrace him. I don't buy that his being white causes him to be unlikable, and I think that this article is garbage.

ESPN has become TMZ.

Duke is hated due to never-ending winning not b-c Grayson is white. Winning creates hate in today's culture, I've just accepted it. Rather be hated & win all the time than be average & irrelevant.

People always try to get me roused up by stating they hate Duke hoops. My non-emotional reply "5 titles", shuts them up pretty fast.

If he was any other race, it COULDN'T be written about him.

I'm black and I hate this. Why? Because it tends to make people say things in the opposite direction that they don't actually mean.

Is a white star in basketball sometimes not the norm? Sure, but it's the same story written about Cam Newton and being a black QB.

My question to the media types is why is it important? It's a cheap template and you just plug in a name and a race.

Sad IMO. Are they that hard up for stories?

As with Laettner, Redick, Scheyer, et al, I could give a f*** what other fanbases think about him. Their ire didn't stop those guys from being great, and it won't stop Grayson. That sort of thing says an awful lot more about the haters than it does the hated.

I think "next" should be replaced with "current".

I think race probably plays a role, but the fact that he goes to Duke and is really good is more of a factor.

Yep, this is complete trash and click bait aimed for Duke haters. I don't even think opposing fans are generally cheering against Allen (or at least not showing the level of hate so far that other players have received). ESPN is now encouraging fans to hate players, which is inexcusable.

Seriously, spare yourself a read. At one point, Dana O'Neill says, and I'm paraphrasing, Grayson Allen has the most punchable face at Duke ever.

Seriously?! This is sad writing. Vilify a 20 year old kid who has NEVER done anything to you or your family. That is sad.

hokie, Like I said before, if Allen was any other race and not at Duke (both factors are important to this discussion), this is not written. I like your point about Newton as well.

Pretty poor taste for an article from someone who is usually pretty solid. Click baiting is what it is and pandering to the anti Duke sentiment among the masses out there.

Yeah Dana O'Neil usually writes a good article. This is just sorrowful.

Since Grayson is the first person in basketball history to trip someone else, maybe he should stay two more years to learn his lesson. :D

Pretty good. Would love to have him trip into the second round draft projections for this year so that he could come back next year. Him on next year's team would be amazing.

I admit I enjoyed the article. I think the "white" part is the same as "Duke" For many stupid reasons people assume that white players aren't as good. The same way they assume that people who go to Duke grew up in rich, preppy neighborhoods with a silver spoon. Both are incredibly stupid assumptions, but it reality many people still believe them. Some people like Redick and Laettner love that target. They play to the crowd and it drives them to do better. Others just get caught up in the wave never having done anything. Does being white at Duke mean you will be hated? No. Does being white at Duke while being a top player on the floor mean you might at times be compared to Laettner, Redick, Collins, Wojo etc? Yes. With that comparison comes the hate. Obviously its not every white player. Mason was one of the top bigs his senior year and he avoided the "next hated white guy" Kelly did as well. Oh people hated them because they won and Duke was on their jersey, but no other reasons.

In the world we live in today this sadly will continue to exist. Racism won't go away until everyone is talked about the same way. Next Hated Guy as Duke....

I appreciate you all's thoughts. I totally get the "they hate us because they are not us," which is very accurate, but I think this article is ridiculous. I could see some moron at a bar see you wearing a Duke shirt and make a stupid comment like "Grayson Allen has the most punch-able face," but this is ESPN.

People that "hate" Grayson Allen, hate that he is good and plays for Duke.

I agree 100%...the hell with what other fans think....I guarantee you every single one of those fan bases and coaches would have taken Laettner,Hurley,Redick and Allen

And if he was black people would be saying "what a great player he is and he plays so hard"

Screw everyone else

didn't a very similar article run at the beginning of the year or at the end of last years championship? it is very ironic that this article is posted the night after allen trips a player. there appear to be many agendas working in this article. all the duke haters are reading it, clicking the link and now have ammo to hate duke even more. congrats dana, mission accomplished.

I actually clicked the link just to read the comments. There are actually UNCheat and UMob fans defending him, haha.

Terrible article but I did like the Redick quote:
"I literally have heard everything you could say about a human being,'' Redick said. "I think it was the fight-or-flight instinct, and I chose to fight. Later in my career, when we'd go out to warm up and they'd start giving it to Paulus, I would almost instigate the crowd to bring it back to me.''

Allen is going to get some heat so I hope he embraces the bad guy role.

What opposing fanbases never seemed to realize is that for guys like Laettner and Redick, they were mostly just throwing fuel on the fire. They, in essence, helped Duke and those players play with that edge. I think Grayson seems to be cut from the same cloth, which is a good thing.

There are three types of players.
Those who are bothered by heckling.
Those who it doesn't have any affect on one way or another.
Those who thrive on it and use it as motivation.

I like the fact that our teams and players are not called soft. I was reading some post on uncheat after their last game and they were calling their players pussies. I don't condone tripping players and such but what he did was not that bad. I used to get to some games early for shoot around when Reddick was playing away games just to see the reaction from fans. He loved it. OFC

What's most preposterous about the article is that it clearly was written weeks or months ago, and she's just been sitting on it until she had an opportunity to publish it. There is no way she wrote that many thousand word article in one night. It's a story that was not shaped by facts; but morphed to accommodate facts.

I thought Grayson became the next most hated Duke player last year when Duke won the NC. That means he is the most hated current white Duke player . The next most hated white Duke player is Luke Kennard. OFC

Yeah to have the quotes and things she had, there is no way she put that together since last night's game. She has been sitting on that with bated breath, hoping for the opportunity. That is kind of sad and most certainly detracts from the validity.

I believe the premise of this article is old and written after the national title game or one similar to it
