maybe that should start cutting back on music, graphics, and loudmouth analysis....AND JUST START SHOWING MORE HIGHLIGHTS AGAIN!

SC hasn't been worth watching, imo, since the 90's when it was all about highlights.

Hightlight shows at the end of the day are a thing of the past. They ain't coming back grandpa. I predict this thread will quickly switch to people crying that ESPN is too liberal, too involved in politics, etc.

I'm old, but why do people care about what Stephen A Smith or Skip Bayless have to say on so many issues? It's like people want to be spoon fed their opinions these days.

I miss Berman and Scott saying things like "as cool as the other side of the pillow" while I watch highlights from every game.

They are laying off because they push a liberal agenda and people aren't buying into it anymore so their numbers are down.

That, and the overwhelming reduction in cord cutters.

Probably the latter.

You can get highlights anywhere and everywhere instantly these days and cords are being cut at a breakneck pace. They have to do something to grow subs...or realistically flatline subs....or probably even more realistically slow the rate of subs loss.

They are a huge reason for all the conference moves in the past 20 years. Throwing money around for tv deals, etc. Then people starting getting rid of cable.

Cord cutters plus they way overpaid for most of their sports deals. The helped push up subscriber costs and played a part in driving customers away from cable and satellite. Add to that their programming has become bad enough that their customers can do without them and get sports elsewhere.

TNT presents a better product broadcasting the NBA. The NHL is on NBC and is a pretty good non cable look. Baseball has local affiliates like TBS here in Atlanta that offer their own specialized broadcasts that are equal to or superior to ESPN offerings on any given weeknight.

Then there are subscriber based services that still offer ESPN along with others at a fraction of the cost for cable. Sling-TV for instance.

No wonder ESPN is bleeding subs...they have no more exclusivity on stuff you otherwise couldn't get before they came along. That's not the case anymore.

NBC does a great job with the NHL and I like a lot of their NBCSN programing, I'm watching more and more of them and less and less of the crap we see on ESPN.

You can get watchespn or the espn app a lot cheaper than you pay for it via subscriber fees and you dont pay for a lot of channels you dont watch. The problem ESPN has is their tv deals and payouts are based on subscriber fees for ALL cable/sattelite customers and when people who watch it buy it and all the others dont it is hard to recoup the advertisement dollars to pay for their deals. These layoffs are a bottom line cut to free up cash that is already spent.
