215 Final: Elijah Brown vs. Nicolas Gonzalez (Mt. Olive)

Period 1:
Brown looks like a supersized Jayden James. Here we go! Hand fighting & head tapping while circling. Brown hits a blast double for the TD, 3-0. He locks up a tilt & adds 4 NF, 7-0. Out of bounds & restart. Gonzalez start down. Brown hooks up another tilt & turns Gonzalez, then gets the quick fall. Wow! That was impressive!

Elijah Brown FALL Nicolas Gonzalez (46-sec)

Elijah Brown takes home OW, pinning his way through a bracket with five nationally ranked kids. Including the finals against an unranked kid (we had him higher than 2 ranked kids) who had knocked off the #11 and #12 kids in the country.

Brown was winning 7-0 in the first before the fall.

Brown's tournament:
R1: F 1:00
R2: F 1:28
Qtrs: F 0:54
Semis: TF 16-0, 1:48
Finals: F 0:46

Semis victim Palumbo was NJ S6 last year, headed to Rutger.

Finals victim Gonzalez was NJ S4 last year, and beat Colbert and Bechtold today. He's committed to East Stroudsburg but gotta think he'll get D1 attention.

Supersized James would work quite nicely

Brown isn't James but he is on a serious trajectory, both size- and results-wise.

FR: 152, DNP at regionals, DNQ for states
SO: 172, SQ, DNP
offseason: won Fargo U16 at 190, beat VT HWT commit Max Konopka (Willie's #16 in 2027) in the finals
JR: 215, S1
SR: 215, 17-1

He's about 6-3 and expects to grow to 6-5. Should be able to get over 250 lb.

Needs to clean up defense some but could be a handful at HWT after Cole graduates. Guys that big don't wrestle like middleweights. He's also unafraid to give up points while trying to score -- another foreign concept at HWT.

I need to go watch some of his matches. Sounds like there is a lot to work with. Tons of potential

While you're at it, check out his Fargo semis win over Iowa commit David Calkins. Brown bombed the U17 World Greco bronze to win. This was just a few months after not placing at Hershey.

I went and watched all his ETR matches on Flo. I was very impressed. He has a lethal cross wrist tilt that he hit almost at will in his matches. His length is a problem for his opponents. He is solid on his feet, with an ability to penetrate on his shots without getting extended underneath. He has the kind of frame that looks like he could put on a lot of good weight. I will be keeping an eye on him. I get the feeling he is just scratching the surface of how good he can be. Edit: I'm embarrassed to admit I had forgotten that Brown committed to Penn State. We Penn State wrestling fans sure are spoiled : )

Kerry McCoy-type potential for growth I'd say, especially since Kerry wrestled 190 as a freshman at Penn State and Elijah is already wrestling 215. Below is an interesting article on Kerry and his jump from the 190 weight class to the then 275 pound weight class after his freshman year.

https://www.psucollegian.com/archiv...cle_2eb8fbcb-8fc3-51d7-ba87-e2196a8572e5.html
Kerry weighed 220-225 in his SO year at PSU. Since he was cutting to 190, he gained probably about 15 lb.

A more recent, maybe closer comparison weight-wise would be Nick Gwiazdowski. Wrestled 215 as a HS senior and close to that weight as a true FR HWT. Then shirted and emerged in the 255 range. One big difference: Brown is already at least 2 inches taller than Gwiz.

Then again, Gwiz was #1 in the country in HS. So at this point it's just a measurements comparison.

ETR is wrestling straight through as a one day tournament due to a school closure on Sunday because of the impending weather.

Finals will start around 7. Something to watch tonight.

@dicemen99 -- so CRSD got a little freaked by the forecast of snow, and closed CR South to outside activities for 1/18?

Yes. To be fair, they were quite freaked out by the unexpected 4 or 5" of snow we got during the event on Saturday. We have a two to three thousand people there that have to travel home (and then do it all over again on Sunday) and the teams driving in from all over.

Since we are a January event, we've been affected by weather a half dozen times or so in the last twenty years. This is the first time we've had to pivot mid-tournament though. Was not ideal, but we did the best we could with what we had to work with. For about 15 minutes when the decision came down, we had a bit of chaos, but the wrestlers and coaches were very understanding once they understood the situation.

The biggest problem we had was with the parents. We had a near riot at our box office until it was announced that we were refunding the extra $15 (for day two) that people who purchased two-day passes had paid. All by parents wearing private school gear, of course. Also, had a very fun conversation with a mother who was very strong in her opinion that we should not be awarding any medals besides 1st or 2nd to any wrestlers since we had to cut our early round consolations short and limit wrestle backs to kids who made the quarters to comply with the 6-match rule. Fun, fun, fun.

Bucks got 4-5" on Saturday? I didn't know it was that much. Sunday was slated to be even more than that, so I guess the SD had some defense. I presume the SD was closed on 1/19, so I was somewhat surprised that they closed the school to outside events on Sunday, but keeping the sidewalk and the parking lots clear during a snow storm must be a PITA for a SD, and also a liability issue.

Ah yes, the 6-match rule would become a factor if you appended that which was slated for Sunday to late Saturday wrestling.

From a reffing perspective, the wrestlers and coaches are generally pretty accommodating when announcements are made mid-tournament about a change in schedule. The parents are a mixed lot.

Sorry that ETR had to be modified due to CRSD and the weather, but it sounds as though you handled it very well.

I live in CRSD (kids go to North). We didn’t get anywhere near 5” on Saturday (more like 2), but we did yesterday. The Lehigh Valley got clobbered Saturday. I-78 was closed due to a fatal multi-vehicle accident near the Berks-Lehigh border. CRSD canceled their MLK day of service today, too. Driving conditions were bad yesterday, so I think CRSD & Diceman did the right thing.

IDK what exactly we got. I was in the gym from 6 am to 9 pm. When I got out it looked like my car had about 4 or 5 inches on it. Maybe it was from the plows.

Whatever it was, yeah it was dicey out on Sunday. Actually, it was still a little dicey coming into work today.

Yes, the MLK holiday could have affected this as well. I believe they could not do the sidewalks and parking lots on Monday because of the holiday, so they needed to do the sidewalks and parking lots on Sunday to be open on Tuesday. I did not hear that from a school official, just from another guy who helps us running the tourney. It was a little chaotic in there when the school officials huddled up with us to talk this through.

Spent thirty years as a public school superintendent, so I feel your parent pain. Everyone knows a better way.
