My impressions of Joseph Thompson: I have been able to watch Joseph Thompson multiple times over the past handful of years. I was able to see Thomson three times live in 2017 (Loyola/Simeon and 5A State Title) as well as seeing Thompson at various camps/showcases. Thompson also plays for HeroH 7on7 this winter. Thompson also played CB/S/WR as well as special teams for the Wildcats in 2017 and was an All CPL All Area and All State performer.
Evaluation of Joseph Thompson: Thompson is a very quick, athletic and twitchy athlete with a ton of athletic tools and upside for the high college level. Thompson has been one of the key's in the Phillips secondary that arguably has been the state's best over the past two seasons. Thompson runs well, is very fluid and can plant a foot in the ground, turn and flip his hips well. Thompson also has very good overall ball skills, has a high level of awareness and makes very good reads. Thompson's overall quickness and closing speed allows him to make up ground in a hurry. Thompson can also play press man as well as play and understand coverages well. Thompson is also a plus player when it comes to run defense and is a hard hitter who wraps up well. Thompson is also a very versatile player who will also be able to contribute on special teams when needed.
Questions or possible room for improvement for Joseph Thompson? Thompson will no question need to add more size/strength and weight at the college level. Thompson also will need to continue to develop his overall game and knowledge level especially when it comes to playing more zone coverages...something he's had to do very little of at Phillips. .
Projected level:
Rivals.com has Joseph Thompson as an unranked name and that will change sooner rather than later. Thompson has already recently released a Top 4 schools list which includes Illinois, WMU, NIU and Toledo. My own ranking of Thompson? I like him to start off as a mid to upper 3 star ranked name and will be a Top 105-20 name in the State of Illinois Class of 2019.
I really like Joseph Thompson as a recruit quite a bit. I've felt for a long time that he has lower to mid tier Big Ten skills and abilities and is also a kid who once locked into a weight and nutrition program will be able to add much needed weight and more strength with very little issues. Thompson is a terrific personality and a very hard nosed kid who is also a constant worker. Thompson is a high level competitor, has a ton of physical tools and upside and is a name who will have a chance to develop into a high level/longer term starter down the line.
