I went to a wedding today for the son of one of my best friends. I expected to only know my buddy’s immediate family. My wife was looking at the seating chart showing who is sitting at each table, and points out a familiar name… Joe Montana. Looking through the entire list I we had someone listed as “Aunt Dirty”, who was actually at our table. it turned out not to be the famous Joe Montana, but my wife said that Aunt Dirty was quite the character.

It got me thinking about whether I would have gone up and spoke to Joe Montana or some other celebrity. I’ve never been an autograph guy, and am rather introverted as well, so I doubt I would have. Aim interested in hearing about any of you all who may have met someone famous at a wedding?

I was at a wedding years ago at the St. Regis in NYC. Robert Rubin, the former U.S. Treasury Secretary, was there. The bride's father was a i-banking big wig who knew Rubin well from his days on Wall Street.

Pam Dawber attended a wedding that was being held at a resort where I was staying. While I did not crash said wedding, I did see her in the lobby and she was quite gracious with anyone who pointed out to her that she was “that girl from Mork & Mindy.”

Not my story: a distant acquaintance of mine grew up with billy crystal. Got invited to his kid’s wedding. Robin Williams was there and sat at their table. Friend tells that williams was never “off” the entire night. Everything was an opportunity for him to entertain, joke, or just be wacky. The next morning they go down to the restaurant for breakfast and Williams is still up. Sees them, proceeds to sit, and is on full speed comedic mode for the entire breakfast. They go to leave and he just moved on to the next group and keeps going. While he was funny, acquaintance says it was getting to be too much, the guy just couldn’t stop being “on.”

Wow, I'm a very respectful person and would rarely intrude but Joe Montana is my idol. As a niners fan, I would be clearly starstruck. However, this would be an occasion that I couldn't hold back and would have at least said that he is an inspiration for all and the greatest quarterback of all time. Shook his hand, walked away and died a happy man. Joe Montana and Thierry Henry are the two sports personalities I have the utmost respect for.

I know I’ve posted about this before, but…

Not a wedding, but I was at a party/reception once where a lot of NFL greats were present. My dad took me to Super Bowl XX in January 1986 to see Da Bears clobber the Patriots. He also somehow finagled tickets to a shindig that NBC hosted a night or two prior. Being the 20th Super Bowl, there was a plan to honor the MVPs of the previous 19 games at halftime… and a number of them were guests of NBC that night.

Over the course of the evening, I got to stand within a few feet of Franco Harris, Terry Bradshaw, and Roger Staubach. Also Mr. T, since the A-Team was in its heyday on NBC at that time, lol.

As to the question of actually speaking to them, I did not. I drifted as close as I could to get those moments burned into my memory, but there was no way my shy 15-year-old self was going to say a word. Today, the 52-year-old version of me would probably just quickly say “It’s an honor to meet you” and maybe ask if I could shake their hand, then be on my way. That’s exactly what I did when I passed by Ki-Jana Carter outside The Beav about a decade ago. He was very nice and seemed happy to oblige me with a handshake.

My Philosophy has always been. They are just another person. So talk to them, don’t talk to them. Doesn’t matter. I have had many celebrities throughout the years walk into my restaurants so they are just another guest. One time though I was at Monday after masters party at house of blues in north Myrtle and full of celebrities. No biggie but my wife keeps texting me and I said I’m standing next to jim cantore John Daly and others just listening to the music, my wife said you must get a pic with Jim cantore and I said no. She said my friend loves him and take a pic with him. So i felt like a schmuck and asked him and he said sure. We took the pic and I sent it to her and said don’t ever ask me to do that again. I never get autographs or junk like that. Ugh.

I went to my cousins wedding in Vancouver. Mike Buble was there and was the entertainment at the reception. My cousin and Buble were good friends growing up in the same neighborhood.

Bob Rubin story when he worked for Citi after being Sec Treasury. All the big shots were in China. on the way home Todd Thompson #2 at Citi kicked Bob Rubin and all the others off the company plane so he could fly home w just Maria Bartiromo
It didn’t end well for Todd after Rubin ripped Sandy Weil *** for having to fly home first class. Maria changed networks soon after. Todd got a new career

My wife is friends from college with Rick Hall, who played the veterinarian on Seinfeld. He’s a terrific guy.

Rick’s wife is Laura Hall, who is a regular on Whose Line is it Anyway? Lovely woman, a very warm person. This video is of Rick and Laura.

I know and have a few prominent (current and former) DC area pro athletes at my house from time to time for birthday parties, play dates, and get togethers. My daughter and son are very close with their kids and the parents are great - very normal. Had a birthday party for my son at a public entertainment place and the employees were mobbing our area because of them. Their manager wasn’t happy.

Cant recall anyone famous I met at a wedding but I have met and spoken with a number of notables at other places. Some who immediately come to mind: Ed Koch at the Metropolitan Opera. Bill de Blasio, Al Sharpton, Randi Weingarten, and Donna Brazile at The House of the Lord Church in Brooklyn. Bill O'Reilly at DiMaggio's Trattoria in Port Washington, LI. Lanny Davis and Johnny Majors at the Nittany Lion Inn. My wife and I one on one with President O'Bama at the White House. The late great Sam Snead at the Greenbriar who gave me a golf lesson.

Sam Snead gave you a golf lesson? Even if it were only a fifteen-second “Hey buddy, maybe you should look into trying it this way,” that would be awesome.

Went to Aspen for skiing long ago. Got out of our cab at the Austin airport to leave. As I waited for my luggage I did note that there was a couple behind me but I didn't look at them. I got me luggage and turned to go into the airport and the couple went to my side that I was turning away from them. They got in the cab and it left. I go into the airport and my friend says that Robert Redford was standing directly behind me.
I asked why didn't you tell me (as I share the same birthdate as him, he's a bit older). He said it was no big deal.
Saw Jack Marin at the movie theater when Jaws was released. Easy to notice as he was head and shoulders taller than most of the other people.

I was hitting balls on the practice range and he had just finished up working with a woman a short distance away. I caught him out of the corner of my eye watching me and I looked over and knew immediately it was him by his signature hat he was wearing. He slowly walked over and he spent the next few minutes making some adjustments with my grip and grip pressure. I later met up with him in the pro shop where he signed a poster and my wife snapped our picture which is on the wall over my desk.

Damn. Some people are just naturally kind. Thanks for sharing.

i’ve been lucky enough to coach some kids that have played professional football and baseball. I’ve also been lucky enough to get invited to their weddings where I’ve seen people look like complete fools fawning over professional athletes. I had a good time at each of those weddings and talked a bit to some other pros, but definitely tried to stay away with all of the other nonsense they were seeing from others.

my dad’s uncle worked for the Secret Service and there were times when I was very young that I was at events that had former presidents and other high-ranking officials in government there.

I insist we were at church with Robert Redford once in Chicago in the late 90s. My wife says I’m nuts. Anybody know if he’s Catholic?

I was in a wedding in the mid 90s that was attended by a few NFL players. Marco Battaglia is the most prominent name I can recall. Rashad Swinger maybe? And Jay Bellamy?

I didn’t but my sister was at a wedding with Derek Jeter and Kate Upton in attendance with only 80 total attendants. Sad to say it wasn’t me instead of my sister.

I was at a Yankees game in 1981, there was a relatively small crowd. Sitting next to me was a young Tom Hanks. I recognized him from a TV show he was on at the time, the one where he dressed as a woman. But I do not believe he was truly famous at the time; or, if he was, I was not aware. I was impressed with how "normal" he was and how down to earth. He was enjoying the game, clearly enjoyed baseball and seemed fairly knowledgeable, and was friendly. I hope he has not changed.

I had sex with Margaret Trudeau.

I shared a plane with Peter Graves, Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Barbara Billingsley.

I once pissed next to John Wayne.
Did you pee on his suede shoes? There is a story about John Wayne giving a young Michael Cain advise about no5 wearing suede shoes because someday you will be peeing in a bathroom stall and the guy next to you will recognize you.
