The officiating screw jobs are completely out of control and, while the officiating has been bad across all of college basketball, it seems to be getting us in a new way every game. That sequence where it was CLEARLY backcourt on Maryland and then CLEARLY an offensive foul on Maryland did us in and these weren’t even bang bang calls. We better be lobbying the league for certain refs and just overall more accountable.

Mark Jackson’s email is [email protected]. I will be emailing him first thing Monday.

If you think NU is getting uniquely screwed, welcome to the club. So does every single other fanbase.

Pretty much every road team gets screwed in the B1G. UCLA game not withstanding, but they are a blue blood,

The difference is we get screwed at home as well, We can point to half a dozen games this year alone where the refs bad calls changed the outcome and not in our favor, Personally I feel every ref should be reviewed at the end of each year and the bad ones canned and replaced, Process should go on each year and either the bottom 10-20% let go each year or if they fall below a certain standard kicked out, That would stop a lot of the nonsense we keep seeing

It's even worse if it isn't just us, and I don't think it's just us. There are simply too many refs that shouldn't be working this level of play and they are impacting games every week.

Exactly. It’s not just us. I’ve said that. But I’m obviously most worried about us. There is simply no accountability for these boobs. Every night they screw up comically and are back the night after…

Honest question, do you think the 90’s Bulls were benefited? Do you think Lebron gets more calls than Luka Garza?

Maryland isn’t the 90s Bulls or LeBron.
That does not seem to answer my questions.

Here’s more, do you think your coach is trying to influence the refs when he gets on their faces?

No one is advocating it would make any difference on any given game. Or that there’s a conspiracy going on. Refs are human and incentives, like with every human being, play a part. To me that’s obvious.

I’m not sure I’m following your line of thinking. Of course refs can impact a game. Coaches work the refs to improve their chances of winning. My point was just that it’s universal, especially in the big ten. Home cooking is an epidemic in this conference.

My point is that the smaller a fish you are the more you get jobbed. In any league, any sport, any country.

It’s amazing how more big euro soccer clubs get away with compared to the minor teams they compete against.

Yeah that’s true. I guess my disagreement is that there are small fish within the conference. I’m not sure anyone in the big ten gets a big fish treatment. If you watch ACC basketball, Duke clearly gets different treatment than, say, Boston College. I’m not sure there’s a dynamic like that in the big ten. We aren’t really a top heavy league, and similarly there aren’t currently any programs that are just endlessly irrelevant the way Rutgers was when they first joined the league (for example).

I don't think there's any league that is not affected by human subconscious bias. At any level refs react with instincts that are biased towards reputation, blowback, etc.

Even when you are a big fish in the B1G, like Michigan State, you have a legendary coach working, all game long, to the point of being extremely annoying to witness, to get more calls going his way. When I am confident an unbiased review would point to MSU getting more calls. That's a big fish, like coach K was, who still makes it a point to be loud about calls. If you are a small fish, you have to try to make your voice heard, even if you are going to get t'ed up and fined more easily.

We were pretty exceptionally unlucky in 2-3 games this year - although one of those had nothing to do with the refs and was Iowa making a prayer 40 footer at the buzzer - but the bitching has gone a little overboard since.

We were pretty out manned in that game. We were getting killed on the boards(especially offensive boards that they got) and that has been the case in the last couple games, The missed calls did help them to sprint out to a more significant lead but hard to say it really changed the outcome, We had lots of holes in our O as well, Martinelli did great scoring almost half our points but he was not getting a whole lot of help. Pretty hard to win when you only score 61 pts. Other games the officiating definitely affected the outcome but in this one it was just one more brick on the load we were carrying

Yet, we beat them earlier in the season...admittedly at home. And had had a 3 game streak against them. Maryland is a solid team, no doubt. But a healthy NU is more than competitive with Maryland.

More like 5-6 games and a number of them were definitely officiating related. Mich, Butler, PSU, and even UCLA where lack of and bad calls down the stretch stopped the comeback are the most notable examples, There were plenty of bad calls in other games but they don't necessarily rise to the level of game changing

We were before we lost 40% of our starting lineup and points to injury. And we did already beat them this year
