Brian Rosenthal@GBRosenthal

Scott Frost on Maurice Washington: “He’s better than I expected.” #huskers #gbr #omaha

Parker Gabriel@HuskerExtraPG

Two scholarship guys not on camp roster: Quayshon Alexander out for the season with an injury. Sedrick King dealing with “personal” things, per Scott Frost. Not sure if he’ll be back with the program when he returns to Lincoln. #Huskers

“He’s gotta pick up his pace physically and mentally” Frost on Adrian Martinez #Huskers

Brian Rosenthal@GBRosenthal

Frost said he wants more consistency from quarterbacks, said he would like them to be a bit further ahead at this point.

Parker Gabriel@HuskerExtraPG
Frost said an upcoming scrimmage will be a watershed moment in QB pecking order and in depth chart races across the board.

Omaha Sports Insider@OSIsports

Frost said he wants his defense to create more turnovers, something they didn't do well last year. Said there were more turnovers created in one fall camp practice than 5 spring practices combined. #Huskers

11:19 AM

Brian Rosenthal@GBRosenthal

Frost also said senior LB @luke_gifford has "exceeded my expectations" after missing spring practices while rehabbing from hip surgery. Said he's big, athletic, with pass rush skill and plays hard. "He's what you're looking for." #Huskers

Direct quotes from SF about Adrian Martinez only...does this mean he's in the lead for starter? I still think he looks the part much more than Gebbia.

It means he was specifically asked a question about how Martinez was doing so he answered it. No one asked him about Gebbia or Bunch.

So since nobody asked a question about any QB other than Martinez, maybe that means he's the likely starter...

( I'm really trying to make this happen :) )

Whether it is Martinez or Gebbia or Bunch I don't much care. I just want the best QB on the field. The more interesting thing to me is not "who is going to be the starter" but rather that Frost is clearly not happy with the progress shown by any of his quarterbacks. I don't want to exaggerate since he did not say they were "terrible", but it does serve as a reminder to us all that we are going to be starting a QB this Fall who has never played in a single game yet at this level. There is going to be a learning curve and growing pains.

On the positive side.... I have a gut feeling that this defense is going to surprise us this year.

Agreed. And if growing pains are inevitable, give me the guy with the most upside.

Exactly! And I think most fans, myself included, think the QB with the most upside is Martinez. But that is all based on what we saw in the Spring game. And if there is anything I have learned in my many years of following Husker football it is that you can't tell **** from the Spring game. lol. If the Spring game is an accurate barometer of a player's potential, then Mazour (sp?) would have been a starter by now.

You see it just like I do. I’m happy if it’s Gebbia or Martinez. I’ll admit the lack of love Gebbia receives from us fans has me rooting for him.

It could just be that he has higher expectations for his qb's, being as he was a former qb himself. They might really be doing just fine compared to the other position groups.

I believe Frost mentioned an upcoming scrimmage will be used to assess many positions, including the quarterback. After the scrimmage they will adjust practice reps. I think after that scrimmage, we'll have a better picture of the depth chart.

Agree. Same with a receiver they had a few years back KC Hyland. Spring Game warrior, never saw the field as far as I know.

Gebbia might be better in the passing game, is my take.

It means the QBs are young and inexperienced in the system. None of them have played a down yet in a real game and this system requires really fast thinking. Frost says the thinking/decision making by the QBs isn't fast enough at this point. Anybody really surprised about that. If he said everything was 100% good, then you'd know that was coach speak and you weren't getting the truthful answers.

Guys, think about the nuances of the news Frost is giving us.

There is absolutely, zero, no question in anybody's mind Martinez is the more gifted runner. Zip.

His position to lose is in the passing game, and Gebbia's position to win, is spinning it like a mofo.

I thought the more interesting comment was that as a group, the QBs seemed to take a step back from where they were in the Spring.

If not Martinez, has to be Gebbia.

I like the kid's arm, and Frost's offense isn't "run-first" like TO's for a QB. Not a lot of triple option pitches and tuck-n-run.

One area Gebbia will never struggle at is passing it. Dude has an arm and can really zip it. Since there all neck and neck, then Gebbia is keeping it tight with that arm of his. Because he’s clearly not the runner the other two are. He’s fast enough to do what Frost needs and wants, which is a plus. I’m excited to see which comes out on top. Both QBs have something special to offer.

Matt Masker?

I kid, but that guy seems tough and determined. It looks like we got a solid QB room despite youth and not having any proven stars, and the competition is an asset.
I’m not overly concerned about them getting called out (yet), but we really need at least one to emerge as “capable”. So much of the team’s success will be riding on the QB play and I’d love to see a new star born
in this Frost nebula.

Of the power 5 games we play only Illinois and Minnesota won’t have returning starters at QB. It is going to be a long season if we don’t have anything beyond a “game manager” at QB.

In games between teams with comparable talent, wins and losses are determined by QB play.

The Colorado game will tell us a lot. They have a pretty good QB returning. Nearly 3000 yards - 60% completion - 2:1 TD to INT ratio

I expect inconsistent play at QB this year. We are going to need a really good running game to compete on offense. The good news is we now have some backs, but it really all depends on the oline

True enough, which scares the sh*t out of me. Lots of folks are saying there's big improvement for the Oline this year......I hope so!! But they were soooooo worthless the last couple of years.....I just don't know how long it takes even HCSF & staff to seriously turn them around. I just don't know.

This. It really is simple. With brand new, young QB's we will need a strong running game or we are in for a long season

This is a big concern of mine as well. How much improvement can we expect in one off season? I have no idea.
