Got this inspiration for the thread off of another thread. What school has the smallest number of Fall Sports for boys to compete in? Wilmington has three listed on their website Golf, Soccer, and Football. When I was in high school it was just football and then SO. year they added golf and either JR or SR year soccer was added as a co-ed sport (which still baffles my mind) and now its boys only. Any other schools have less than that? What about schools with a ton? Maybe 6 or more? Not sure what the larger schools do.

Thornridge has fall boys' teams in football and cross-country only. On the girls' side, volleyball and cross-country.

In the fall Lockport has, Cross Country for boys and girls, Football, Golf for boys and girls, Soccer for boys, Swim & Dive for girls, Tennis for girls and volleyball for girls. But Lockport is a big school and there are more offerings than this in spring.

Evolution of the fall sports mix...I-8 schools play football and soccer...golf and cross country are sports 3 & 4. Herscher doesn't have golf. Wilmo & Coal City don't have cross country. Manteno & Herscher were cross country powers in the 80's ... and then soccer largely gutted their cross country teams in the early 90's. Manteno would have 20 boys on the cross country team in the 80's because the only fall sports were golf and cross country ... and then Cross country completely disappeared for several years when football started in 2000 (2 years prior to playing full varsity).

Westmont might play like tackling dummies on the football field, but unlike the rest of the I-8 the Sentinels have a great cross country tradition that continues - including a state runner-up trophy not too long ago. They have as many state trophies in cross country as they have football playoff appearances...two if I counted right.

Watseka for years only played the big 3 - football, basketball, track. That's one way smaller schools often maximize their athletic potential...focus everyone on one sport only at a time...
