The House litigation settlement is interesting in itself.......as how can a court agree to terms that would have to be carried out by legislative action - like ensuring NCAA immunity on further anti-trust suits? how can you have a "negotiated final settlement" that includes only a small % of the total athletes - the class is too small even though sizable as a lawsuit goes.

anyhow the understanding or lack thereof is amazing among media gurus and many fans. among the remarkable assumptions is this is just the beginning and there is plenty of money for higher "revenue sharing" models. They are comparing the % for CFB to the NFL, which has many differences.

Consider the differences that would impact this:

  1. Are the athletes now employees of the University which make it complex? Hiring - firing and rules around employees.
  2. If they are not employees then still student athletes so now Title IX plays a role? Do members of the womens golf team get the same pay for play?
  3. The answers to 1 and 2 impact the numbers of people getting pay to play $$$, which would be many times the NFL?
  4. If they are employees do they have to be students?
  5. Was the TV money only meant for CFB and possibly MBB? If so, how do you keep it away from the other sports?
  6. Is there a salary cap and managed like NFL? That means NIL money would have to be true NIL and not pay for play (i.e. would need to be like Wendys commercials).
  7. Who is governing and negotiating with the players? Again are all the "players" every athlete on campus?
  8. When did we think Universities are loaded? Many are entering a dark period of student loss which is a national issue. Many are in major financial problems now.
many more questions to come, but very difficult situation.

Penn State just voted to spend $700 Million to renovate 1/2 of their football stadium.
At least 4 of Penn State's coaches bring home more $$$ than the President of the University (even though she is one of the most highly compensated presidents in the nation)

Next question?
