Fascinating Campbell comment

Agreed. I thought he was a "keep your nose to the grindstone" kind of coach. In fact, it seems many here portrayed him as the opposite of James. Perhaps it was truly a comment that slipped out and will remain out of character. There is no coach as popular as one who has not yet coached a game and been forced into making those split second decisions. I think he will do well. But, without better talent acquisition, I don't see cracking the top 3 in the conference. PSU is contending for #4 with USC, MIchigan, and Washington. Ultimately, he will be expected to acheive what Kraft promised or suffer the wrath.
Am I missing something? Wasn’t it Kraft who said Penn State fans deserve a Natty?

Who won a Big Ten Championship in his 3rd season which was the first year he had a full complement of scholarship players and won two playoff games while our new coach who was hired by Kraft took meet the “standard” of winning Big and National Championships because the fans “deserve” a Natty won zero championships and qualified for the same number of playoff games coaching a decade in an inferior conference. Touche.
Can you use some punctuation in your post and repost so I can under WTF you are trying to say? We may be in agreement but I can’t tell. My post was facetious by the way.

I reread your post and decoded it. We are on the same team here. You may have missed my sarcasm in my “salesman” post.

Sorry but I think you're reading too much into that statement. What's he supposed to say?
We need the season to start ASAP.
100%.

I’m a lifetime Washington Redskins-Commanders fan and I have not seen a worse middle-of-the-week communicator than Joe Gibbs. He was useless in those situations. You have to try, it’s part of the job, but it won’t make or break you.

There is really nothing interesting about this quote. I guess you could say he is focused on the history of PSU football but he has said this from day 1 so nothing new.

What would have been interesting (but he would never say this as it would cause too much media distraction and social media chatter nor would I want him to) is if he said that we need to get back to representing the history the right way. Or something along those lines where he was taking a dig at BGJ.

Just win Baby!

That offense is no joke. We will see if they tackle. We will need to beat them in a shoot out. Not confident about our secondary against that QB and their WRs.
Yeah, they will be a solid team, no argument here but Colin Blowhard is such a USC homer that you might as well be asking their AD how they think they will fare this year.

I think we have a pretty good secondary. The question is if our DL can pressure their QB.

As long as tOSU remains what they are the rest of the conference will be fighting over table scraps.

Indiana caught lightening in a bottle last year. We're not close.

PSU definitely has a steep hill to climb but I like the attitude and process. What is missing? Like others said, Kraft stepping up to raise $ where his mouth is so some high 4* and a couple 5*s can be recruited/signed.

Teams can change a lot in one year with the transfer portal. Looking at last year’s team means nothing these days.
Yes they can - and will.

But, let's not be obtuse and absurd:
Who is going to win more games next year?
Indiana/Ohio State/Oregon? or Purdue/Michigan State/Maryland?

They’re not blaming that on Joe, are they?
It happened on Franklin's watch. Along with all the bad weather, COVID and 12 National Championship that PSU would have won had he not been such a screw up. Finally we have culture and a team the fans and Penn State's history deserves. ;)

He did it and did it with 23 annd 24 year old players. Others have tried the same hard nosed tough football approach and more often than not failed in this era of college football. Most teams want physical hard nosed players. This is nothing new.

Don’t fool yourself. He had athletes last year. Rewatch our game with them and look at their WRs. We didn’t have anyone close to those guys. Hemby and Black their RBs are currently on NFL rosters.

The year before he didn’t have the athletes and they got smoked by good competition but beat all the tomato cans.

Moving forward they have more money than us because they have a whale donor. We don’t. Coaching and hard nose football can’t fix that. We can’t live in the past and rely on hard nose football to win.

CMC is well aware of the financial constraints on our program. He will build culture and toughness but he knows it’s not enough to win. He will politic behind the scenes for cash and he’s gonna hit a wall unless he goes 10-2 with a playoff berth to generate some momentum, and possible cash for the portal.

This is a pivotal year that will impact the next 4 years. Look at next years schedule and compare it to how young the roster will be. It is sobering. He’s a developmental coaching type of staff but he knows he needs some playmakers and athletes too.

He coaches close games, rarely steps on anyone’s throat. This staff will try to grind out wins. Hoping the schedule aids them enough to get there.
Fair enough, he had athletes at wr, but it was a blue collar team overall of scrappy players that was extremely well coached. Every player did exactly as they should each play. One of the starting d-linemen was from my high school in PA. He was pretty good there but nobody would have predicted this guy to be starting in a natty. Cig is a coach that elevates his players above their star ratings.

Or he could wait until he beats an Oregon or Ohio State and then explain that he is gratified to give "the university and fan base" the kind of team it's history deserves. I think the expression here is "we beat the teams without a pulse." I don't think beating Marshall, Wisconsin and Maryland is what he was brought in here to do. Penn State has beaten Washington (a first half blowout) and USC (away). Perhaps beating Michigan in the big house is his opportunity to boast.
Perhaps he was not talking about wins and losses when he said giving "the university and fan base" the kind of team it's history deserves? Franklin was a player's coach that let the inmates run the asylum. Campbell appears closer to the type of coach that fits PSU's history.

From a distance, it doesn't appear that Ohio State and Oregon are in "flux." Georgia, LSU and Texas are other teams that seem to retain, recruit and reload top talent. Pretty difficult to acheive excellence at the highest level shopping at Ollie's.
Your hero rarely beat teams the caliber of Ohio State and Oregon, so if they aren't in flux then PSU needed to be -- unless you were content beating Marshall, Wisconsin and Maryland.

I'm a fan. I don't seek contentment from the outcome of some athletic contest in which I'm not a participant. Beating Ohio State means little if you don’t beat the Wisconsins and Marylands..I'm excited to see how many 10 , 11 and 13 win seasons are imminent. Including wins over the likes of Ohio State, Oregon and Indiana. Since you claim Franklin was the reason for PSU losses to Ohio State and Oregon and it had nothing to do with talent...then excellence at the highest level will be ours this season.

Hmmm. Who recruited the talent again? If it failed, who coached it?

Hmm Franklin is still recruiting better than Campbell. The issue is that Ohio State and Oregon are better programs than Penn State. They attract better talent and have more resources. But no worries we now have a staff that doesn't need blue chip talent. They coach em up. LOL

Wait. You mean a coach that got hired late in the recruiting season is being outrecruited by a guy that got hired earlier and rerecruited his previous recruits before the new coach got there? Who knew? Let's see what they do with those recruits and see what happens in future years before we anoint a winner, why don't we? In the age of NIL, do transfers count in the equation? 10-2 or bust, it's good enough for us!

Nope 10-2 is good enough, isn't it? No need to shoot any higher or it is a mistake.
9 teams without a pulse. So you are "content" with 1-2? That isn't excellence at the highest
Pissing excellence is the bar. So stop saluting big game, we got his asss fired lol
Did him a favor. Now we win em all too. Go Cylions...maybe go to class? Beat Marshall. Didn't Campbell lose to Ohio?

Making excuses already. 10-2 with this schedule makes you 5th or 6th in the Big Ten. Now that's a big improvement. 😎
What will the excuse be in 27 and 28 when the likes of Ohio State, Oregon and Indiana are back on the schedule?

No excuses Jumbo Dumbo. 10-2 is a record with this schedule that would send you Jimmy Frank fanboys running for the Vaseline and tissues to rub one out. This nonconference schedule was completed by 2023. Who was coach again then using this to try to run up his W/L totals that impress you so much?

That’s not the point…a team that was 7-5 or 6-6 last year (or worse) could easily be 10-2 or 9-3 this year and not be an easy out for a team.
