Fascinating Campbell comment

This was going to be a transition year no matter what. The schedule will keep PSU interesting. Let's hope Kraft finds the money to match his big mouth and in turn gives Coach Campbell the chicken he needs to create chicken salad for 2027-28.
Correct...Marshall and others conveniently forget we were losing most of our production regardless of the coach. 2026 was also going to be the transition from Allar Allen and Nick to the next era. It's not like we lost elite guys in the portal either.

I’ve actually received many compliments over the years for having graduated from Penn State, and not from Penn Staters. Then again, those folks were probably shocked that I obtained a college degree once they got to know me. 😞
They definitely were

Here are some choice quotes in this thread..
"The biggest strength of this team is its schedule"

This is kind of like getting a comment from your boss..."Your biggest strength is you usually have a smile on your face."

I don't even know what to say about that.

Then another beauty...

"It's easy to approach a season with confidence when you have 9 teams "without a pulse" and 3 teams you claim are big games but all could have 3 or more losses at season's end. I'll wait for history to repeat itself in 2027-28."

What??

So what if USC or Michigan has two losses and we handed them one of them? Is that not a big game because they have two losses? What if we beat Michigan but then Bryce Underwood gets hurt after our game and Michigan loses close games to Indiana, Oregon and OSU?? Is our Michigan game not a Big Win?? What if we beat Michigan but Bryce Underwood does not get hurt but they lose close games to Indiana, OSU and Oregon then our win is not a Big game win? But Michigan is still a top 15 team win because their close losses are to all playoff teams? I'm so confused!!

Is everyone following because there will be a quiz at the end of the season after we moved the proverbial goal posts 20 times during the season as to not give Campbell any credit for anything.

So there is a possibility we could go 12-0 but have no Big wins??? Inquiring minds want to know?? That means we don't have to give Campbell any credit and can say BGJ would have done just as well.

Everyone beware that this could happen and if it does everyone should know we have 0 Big wins and Campbell gets zero credit because he won all easy games. Let's set the record now. You can't treat my hero, BGJ, like that and get away with it!!

I wonder if this same poster gladly counted our wins vs SMU or Boise State as a Big wins?? USC in 2024 on the road could not possibly be a big win then...oh wait maybe it was??

What history repeats itself in 2027-28? The history in 2026? And is it bad history, good history, luck history? What is it? Not winning any Big games history? Getting lucky and winning one Big game but we got lucky so we don't count it as a Big game history?

The season cannot start soon enough so we can begin the fire Campbell campaign.
The year OSU won the national championship, if we would have held on and beat them, they would have had three losses and not made the playoffs, so that would not have been considered a big win, just a win over OSU when they had a down year. That’s how it works on this board.

I used to be happy with a 10-win season and a New Year's Day Bowl game. Not any more. I now see how Penn State fans demand perfection. FIRE MATT CAMPBELL if he loses one game this year!!! Penn State fans demand and deserve perfection and a national championship EVERY YEAR!!!!

"We're trying to win football games, don't misunderstand that," said Paterno. "But I don't want it to ruin our lives if we lose. I don't want us ever to become the kind of place where an 8-2 season is a tragedy. Look at that day outside. It's clear, it's beautiful, the leaves are turning, the land is pretty and it's quiet. If losing a game made me miserable, I couldn't enjoy such a day."

Screw that thinking. After seeing how Penn State fans were, it's win at all cost. Paterno didn't have his priorities straight.
Should certain folks on this board change their expectations now that Franklin is gone? Should Campbell not be held to the same standard where 10-2 is not acceptable?

I agree! It's something we were never going to do with Fraudlin. We must strive to do better than the last regime did under that snake oil salesman.
And something we didn’t do prior to Franklin, so there’s that.

I an so sick of the stupid “what Penn State Fans deserve” drivel - you must be pretty thick to not understand that this program aspires to be competitive with the likes of OSU. This is not a fan issue - we are along for the ride. Why would we pay a coach millions to beat cupcakes - we already did that with Franklin but he wasn’t hired for that but that is what he was - we will see if Matt gets it done - time will tell. Hopefully the Franklin Fanboys figure that one out or just slide over to a VT Fanboy.
If you call every team a coach beats a cupcake, then no coach is going to succeed.

Franklin could have gone 9-3 this year after losing everyone we lost and I wouldn't have complained. 10-2 would have been great.

Honestly, people comprehend that the issue last year was Franklin spent the money to bring back everyone (including a QB that didn't fit his scheme) then not only lost to teams that were as good or better than us but he stopped beating teams that we should have been able to beat easily. That can't happen when you have the veteran team that we did.

This was going to be a rebuilding year with or without Franklin--that still means we're expected to win 9 games but we weren't a contender. Campbell will have much higher expectations come 2028.

You’re in the minority.
Maybe--I believe there were always people that just hated Franklin to hate Franklin. He could have went 10-2 last year and won 2 playoff games and people would have wanted him out. I think "most" didn't want him out until the UCLA/Northwestern disaster that was completely unacceptable as he lost the team. Just like we have people like Marshall that would have defended him if he went 2-10. I think/hope most are in the realistic group even if they're frustrated during the games.

I get that, but if they’re going to hold Franklin to a certain standard, they should hold Campbell to the same standard.

Agreed--but that wasn't the standard Franklin was held to in his first season either.
Unless you're replacing an all-time great who left you in a perfect situation you aren't going to be expected to attend for titles in year 1
We were a 500 team last year. 9-3 is a big step forward.

Franklin was held to that standard in his first year by some, but he got a little more leeway due to sanctions. Campbell has more talent this year than he’s going to have next year, plus he’s playing all the teams Franklin was expected to beat every year, so 9-3 just doesn’t seem to cut it.

If you're not fine with 9-3 then you're comparable to one of the extremists that were unfairly holding Franklin to "that standard" in year one.
Sanctions had nothing to due with Franklin being given grace early on--almost every coach is.
And, yes, I said 2028 not 2027 is when the expectations skyrocket for him. Once 2028 hits any year we don't make the playoff is a failure--and in most years that won't be enough. Next year has 8 or 9 wins written all over it.

It's interesting that no one here wants to address PSU's football record in the 150 games before Franklin arrived. But "We deserve better."
Paterno was washed up and wouldn't leave putting the entire program in a bad state that O'Brien was tasked with fixing because the job wasn't sought after--he left for multiple reasons--then Franklin came in and did a great job improving the program. I think ALMOST EVERYONE gives him credit for that--the problem was he hit his ceiling. Time to go--whether it works out or not we'll eventually find out but he had to go. Just like Richt had to go when Georgia moved on. Doesn't mean he's not a good coach--it was time. See the Steelers keeping Tomlin too long.

I was always fine with 9-3 or 10-2, I’m just trying to stay consistent with the board now that we have a new coach.

It’s not me, it’s others on here.
I'm confused (probably may fault)--did you not say you're always fine with 9 or 10 wins and that's the same for Campbell as it was with Franklin? Wouldn't Franklin have higher expectations last year given not only his tenure but coming off a semifinal run with most of the team returning?

No, I was always fine with 9 or 10 wins, especially 10. I don’t go into seasons thinking my expectations make a bit of difference…I enjoy every win and hate every loss…I’ve been a PSU fan long enough to realize that we haven’t been the dominant football program for years that some on here think we are.

Regardless of whether or not your expectations change things (you're right they don't) we all have them
I never said we have been a dominant program for years--what does that have to do with my comments?
I don't understand what's happening here
Franklin did a great job building a program and crashed and burned last year after the loss to Oregon which is why he was fired and deservedly so--now, Campbell comes in to a 2026 team that wasn't going to be good regardless of who was the coach. Last year, our start to the season wasn't acceptable. If Franklin would have won 10 games last year and a playoff game then went 8-4 this year I'd have been fine with that. Not every team is the same--there's different expectations each year--especially when you bring everyone back and make the comments he did.
But whatever--you're just rambling here and changing the discussion to something not being discussed.

So you expect James Franklin to be Joe Paterno???? Seriously???? Realistic expectations much????

No, but I expect better than 4-21 against top 10 teams. That is not unrealistic for this program. I expect good clock management, good roster management, and not going into every game against good teams expecting the coach and team to shlt the bed. None of that is unrealistic.

Franklin fanboy much????
