DB Cornelius Sturghill was wounded in a drive by shooting when he went home this summer. He'll sit out this year. Prayers up for him.

Shot in the foot in a drive by? Could not find any local Memphis news coverage of it ...but shootings in Memphis are as common as yard sales.

Jesus, kid is lucky considering the circumstances. Wish senseless violence could be avoided. Hope he makes a full recovery.

The secret to avoiding situations like this is hiding behind the sofa that is for sale at the yard sales.

Wonder what part of the city he really was in when he got shot, of course it could happen anywhere..

I wonder if he was going to play much, I had a cousin on my older brother's conference winning team in high school that was the fastest player on the team with good size and still didn't play much at all-------joined the army his senior year IIRC, but he did win a Silver Star in Korea for carrying a wounded companion across a field to safety under heavy machine gun fire. Probably more important in the long run, most players today are just trying to get to the megabucks, and a lot look for shortcuts, like Swift and his stupid buddy we just lost.

An no, while I do have some sympathy for some misguided that get hooked, I have ZERO sympathy for those that prey on them..

I watched a special on 20/20 the other night about a freshman in high school, popular and great grades, no problems, that decided to try LSD as a lark while her friend was staying overnight. Took one drop on a 1/4x1/4" piece of paper, and it killed her. The story is there is a new bunch of synthetic drugs that are changing all the time, and when they find one and outlaw it they change a molecule or two and they have to find it and outlaw it again. Very dangerous gamble, no one in this case thought it was dangerous at all.

If IDIOTS would stop (or not start) doing drugs t then senseless violence would stop!

Socioeconomic status and culture have a lot to do with it. You'd be more likely to get into it too if you were raised to think illegal drugs are just part of life.

That's another conversation entirely, though.

Like I said, all the best for the kid. He's going to have a rough recovery.

Thanks to all for the kind words. I only heard about this yesterday. In light of what could have happened the foot injury only is "good" news. In other injury news expected ILB starter Stacey Thomas underwent surgery for an unnamed "non-football related" condition.

Peace

1) Not a problem at all, WC. Any decent human can look past rivalries and I think a lot of positivity came from the red side back when news broke that Bonner was stabbed repeatedly. At the end of the day, we're all just people.

2) Good Lord. Any indication of how severe Thomas's injury is? Always sucks to lose a starter- even if just for a few weeks. Best of luck to him as well.

With all the terrible things going on in the world these days, it puts a sports rivalry into its proper perspective for sure...

Hope this kid makes a full recovery and finds success going forward.

I'm not sure, but I think you might have exagerated the All American's demise a little bit.

But from looking at the pictures of young DEFORMED people's mug shots arrested for meth violations if you had said meth instead of marijuana I probably could agree with your before and after pictures.

What was your point anyway, drugs are fine?

--That was supposed to be funny?

Just watched 60 minutes segment on the heroin epidemic in Ohio (middle class America), a lot of it started by pain pills which are also an opiate. A lot of parents don't know what hit them.

The obvious joke here is apparently not faster than a speeding bullet. But seriously that's terrible, he's lucky to be alive and I hope he makes a full recovery.

Sturghill is a redshirt sophomore. Moved from wide receiver to defense last year. He had not been able to break into the two-deep. His biggest contribution was probably going to be on special teams. He would have been in the mix as one of our punt returners, along with starting cornerback Jaire Alexander. One of those veteran players who could really help with team depth in a close game, so it does hurt that he's out.

Also, Sturghill was the fastest player on the defense (not as fast as Lamar Jackson or James Quick).

Thomas is a much bigger loss if he's out for any length of time. He subbed for James Burgess and led the team in tackles with 12 when Burgess was ejected on the first play of the Music City Bowl. With Burgess' graduation, he was a likely starter at one inside linebacker spot.

That is a great point and one I make to my kids quite often when they talk about "a friend" used something.
I take them tot he internet and have them look up how synth drugs are made, what goes in to them. Then I ask them if they would let the person caught making the drugs even cook their dinner.
Drain cleaner, Battery acid, Lithium from batteries, etc. found routinely in man made drugs.
