I grew up in NY so would always go to the Museum of Natural History. Just amazing, and dinosaurs on the top floor.

The WWI museum in KC is awesome. It was designed by the same people who created the Holocaust museum in DC. Highly recommend. I think it is one of 2 WWI museums in the world (Germany the other?).

The Hermitage in St. Petersburg is another incredible museum (it is a former imperial palace) not previously mentioned. It contains most of the treasures of the czars of Russia, much of it western European.

The Wright Patterson and Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola are both fantastic.
Another mention for the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola.

Well frack. I'm going to Pensacola this fall and wanted to visit while I'm there, but it's not gonna be easy, apparently, because they recently restricted access:

https://www.navalaviationmuseum.org/

The National Naval Aviation Museum is open Monday through Sunday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. to current Department of Defense (DoD) ID cardholders. Access to NAS Pensacola is limited to current Department of Defense (DoD) ID card holders (active duty service members, retirees, and their families) and Veterans who possess a Veterans Health Identification Card (VHIC) from the Department of Veterans Affairs that displays the Veteran’s eligibility status. DoD ID card holders can escort guests as part of the Trusted Traveler Program, but must remain with their guests at all times.

Unless sponsored through the Trusted Traveler program, no civilians will be granted access onto the base until further notice, and thus will not be able to access the National Naval Aviation Museum.

We have established a special visitor information line at 850-452-8450 for answers to your questions about visiting the museum. Plan your visit today!

'Reckon I'll be making a call tomorrow. :/

Honestly, for Kentuckians, I’d really recommend going to the Frazier History Museum in downtown Louisville. They’ve kind of pivoted to focus on local history, from sports to bourbon. Entire place pretty much dedicated to history of Kentucky. If you like the state, you’ll like the museum.

Add another vote for the US Air Force Museum in Dayton. Pre-COVID, I would take my son up there a few times a year.

A few years back my daughters took me up to the USAF museum at Wright Patterson in Dayton. It was quite cool to see the Minuteman III ICBM missile display and the mock-up of the command capsule. I worked on those when I was in the Air Force back in the late 70s. Was good to be able to show them what the old man did in his younger days.

That is a great museum. Takes a full day to see it all.

Have not been to WWII Museum yet, but really want to.

Truman's Little White House in Key West is pretty fascinating. The guy that gave us the tour is one of the best guides I've ever seen.
Not a museum, but one time back when I was working in college athletics, I went to one of our away basketball games over winter break because the opponent needed help staffing the game with all the students and majority of the staff gone. Rode on the bus with the team, so got there way earlier than I needed to be, but I didn't want to do the 6-hour round trip drive to save an hour.

So I decided to walk around campus checking out the athletic facilities or any other building on campus that was open, which wasn't much since nearly everyone was gone. Even though I don't like baseball much, it was at the top of my priority list because it was new and pretty lavish for the level they play at.

One of the baseball coaches was in the office, which was at the baseball facility.. He saw us, came out to greet us, and gave us a tour of the facility inside and out - showed us the coaches offices, locker room, training room, indoor batting cages, etc. Basically got to see everything that would normally be off limits to regular ole joes like myself.

Was pretty neat, he gave us all the inside info on how it came to be and everything. The real story, not the fancy PR version the school would give you. Turns out their financing campaign was pretty easy. They had an alumnus that was a pretty significant MLBer back in the 90s and 2000s, 7x All-Star, made nearly $100 million for their career, etc. They called him up and asked if he could donate some money towards the cost. He just asked them how much they needed to fully fund it and he sent in a check for that amount. One call and the fundraising campaign was done lol
