Middleswarth chips suck.

Good Blue Box

Kettle

Cape Cod.

Dieffenbachs

chip has to be crisp and salty, lard also helps. Goods Blue Box for the salt and lard.

Again, Middleswarth is mediocre to terrible.

As a kid, Middleswarth hands down. After finishing the paper route, at the corner store I'd grab a returnable bottle of RC cola (18 cents), a 5-cent bag of Middleswarth, and two penny pieces of bubble gum -- all for a quarter. Wasn't thrilled when they started putting Middleswarth in the tubs with the clear bag inside, but they were better than anything else we had (Wise, Charles Chips).

After college the wife and I moved to Florida and had a few dark decades as Middleswarth wasn't available down there. Heck, gnocchi was hard to find! Basically, we got used to buying whatever national brand Costco had in bulk. When we moved back, we had an uh-oh moment. Middleswarth just wasn't the same anymore. Every year or two I'll try a bag of regular and a bag of kettle-cooked just to see if they got it back, but, nope, sorry. At this point I bounce back and forth between Grandma Utz kettle-cooked, Lay's kettle-cooked, and Cape Cod. There was a time about a decade ago I could get Dirty's potato chips from Louisiana, but then they contracted Utz to make them up here and it wasn't the same (and they rightly disappeared).

Not joking about this....

The best potato chips I ever ate were freshly fried, lightly salted with rock salt and masala
In a train station somewhere in Southern India.

Second best were also freshly fried and lightly salted with garlic salt from a street vendor in Cairo.

Persing's potato chips in Elysburg Pa. In elementary school we'd cross the street at lunch. You could buy a bag of the small pieces that didn’t get packaged for 5 cents. Freshly made that morning.

The best French fries I’ve ever had were from a Persian restaurant near the train station in Munich.

Good’s (the red bag) has been my favorite as of late.

Whoever likes Utz and never tried Good’s needs to do so. It’s the same type of chip as Utz, just better all around. Again go for the red bag. The blue bag is just a middle of the road kettle chip (think Diffenbachs).

Martin's waffle bbq and Helluva Good french onion dip! My go to combo!

Super Troopers Yes GIF by Searchlight Pictures

I can do without the heluva dip. Prefer that with standard martins kettle cooked. But my go to is the martins waffle bbq with twin pines sweet stick. Matter of fact I found a place in Brunswick county NC (coastal NC near the SC border) that gets Wednesday deliveries of Martins waffle bbq’s.

As a native Western New Yorker who went to Penn State, I can attest that Pennsylvania has the best chips hands down. I liked Wise and Lays as a kid up here. Got down to PSU and it was another world for chips. Now, you can get Utz up here. Loved Middleswarth BBQ down there.

I came over today to see what this Board was discussing and the top topic was “Favorite Potato Chip”.😂😂😂😂

Back to the Den. 🙂

Outside of getting lathered with recruiting talk (great for business - never ending and always changing), what is there to talk about in July? Don’t know if it’s my age or what but just get me to the games - don’t care about any of the other nonsense.

Snyder’s of Berlin original Jalapeño chips circa the 90’s, before all spicy chips had to be ‘kettle’ cooked. Remember sharing a bag with my dad watching MST3K in the summers….

Growing up in Sunbury, we were a Middleswarth & Gibble’s family. Paternal grandparents were Bickel’s & Good’s. Weis didn’t carry Hartley’s back then, but we discovered them when I came to Penn State, back when they still used those wax paper bags. My parents quickly switched their allegiance to Hartley’s.
Lots of memories in Sunbury. Before the advent of health clubs, college FB players, home for the summer, trained at the YMCA there. Glenn Fausey (Memphis State), Steve Jarret (Lock Haven)), Roger Hoffman (Susquehanna) to name a few of the regulars. After lifting I would often take my future bride to the Iron Skillet.

Andy peachy's amish potato chips very thin and crispy. Cooked in coconut oil so they are not as unhealthy Only makes them Sept til he runs out of potatoes Usually around Christmas.
wow…those sound amazing. Frankly, at this point in my life, I am only going for chips fried in lard, avocado oil, or coconut oil. The rest are all super processed and horrible for your body. They may taste good, but they are poison.

This thread is fun. It's not nearly as contentious as a "who makes the best cheesesteak" thread or anything which pits Wawa against Sheetz. Still, there's enough contempt for the other brands to make it entertaining.

Back in the day, Troyer Farms had no equal, but once the were sold they changed for the worse (not even sure they are even sold any longer). Big Middlesworth BBQ fan and I like Utz quite a bit. But I have to say when I think of potato chips, Herr's would not even come to mind.
Troyer Farms BBQ was my all time favorite and haven’t found anything to match it. You’re correct that after they sold they went downhill then closed. Still looking for something close.

Had some Lay's Tzatziki chips over in Greece that were righteous. Worked at PSP Selinsgrove for 9 years...and now and again we would get a box of Middleswarth BBQ chips that they put through the duster twice for us. Very good!

Well, a survey done via Instacart claims Herr’s is the favorite chip of Pa. Ohio is Pringles!🤮
