This years Duke team would beat last years UNC team 9 out of 10 times. There’s not telling how bad this years duke team will beat UNC this season. Gary is in for a rude awakening.
In defense of Platek, we really know nothing about him. Just remember, Goldwire was also a 3-star....and he’s certainly looked better than one. Platek could too.

You see, I think this is almost as equally absurd as the statement Gary made. We would not beat them nine of 10 times. They wouldn’t make mincemeat of us, either.
Their team last season was very good and won a national championship. Our team this season has played three games. Heck, our freshmen haven’t even played a road game yet. This team has more ‘NBA’ talent, but that doesn’t equal championships and never will.

It's only been 3 games, but this team has the most skill at all 5 positions plus a deep bench. I haven't seen a Duke team this loaded in over 15 years. UNX has one of their weaker teams, especially in their frontcourt. I think we'll beat the wheels off of them this year. Talk is cheap, so I will just wait and see. One of my Hole co-workers made the comment, "I'm not worried, Grayson Allen is not going to score 37 pts every game."
No he’s not going to score 37 every night. But the fact that he did in such efficient fashion against the number two team in the country is very impressive. We also don’t need him to. They can try and dismiss duke all they’d like and try and justify in their mind that we aren’t that good- they’re fans of the arch rival team. But that’s just fluff- if we stay healthy, he and the rest of Tar Heel nation will find out.
The comparison wasn’t being made to Duke this year vs. UNC this year. It’s us this year vs. them last year. It’s completely absurd at this time saying a team that’s played three games would destroy a team that won the national championship. Completely absurd.
My fault Jay. I was comparing our teams this year. I'm not one to speculate on comparing what ifs from past seasons. I've got another UNX buddy who's a realist and he's dreading playing us this season.
Of course I never would have thought we would have beat them the year Rivers made his last second shot either. I guess anything can happen, but I love our chances this year!
Right but that’s typical Gare. This is his schtick. He makes arguments that in no way can be actually proved one way or the other and passes them off as facts, calls you an idiot and the rest of them jump on (mostly him using his alter egos).
That entire thread can be copy and pasted over here. It’s true, the ultimate fact can never be proven one way or another. But although UNC won a title, which can’t be taken for granted, they were not some historic team. Heck we beat them 2/3 times last year in a down year. The thread is so egregiously dumb there’s no point in even arguing. Duke has proven nothing this year but our roster is historically talented.
I dont think comparisions between teams of different years are "absurd", particularly in a rivalry on a message board. Thats just fans being fans, and what message boards are about. Heck its all speculation anyway, and we speculate on everything here from who next year's 7th man will be to when Roy will have his next bowl of 'naner puddin....OFC
It is absurd to take the position he did. His entire argument is based around the fact this Duke team has only played 3 games. You can’t say we are national champions only because we haven’t been given that opportunity yet. Could we lose in the tourney, absolutely, see UK, but to first create that thread and then take such an aggressive position with literally nothing other than unknown to support it, is again, egregiously stupid. Debating teams from different years, go ahead, not my cup of tea, but it’s a messageboard, go right ahead. But it was his position that was idiotic and as timo said, par for the course with Gary.

It's absurd right now. I love comparisons too. But, this Duke team has played three games. Comparing them to any champion at this juncture is downright absurd. Now, if things progress as we hope the conversation maybe starts to take shape in a couple months. Three games in? No, not at all.

He’s not doing it because he’s trying to spark engaging conversation. He’s doing it because he’s a super homer blowhard. His position is absurd.
We all know Gary is an idiot. He holds a crazy opinion that this Tar Hole team is better than Duke and the other teams that played Tuesday, right?
If you think this Duke team is better than last years Duke team, which I do, then you think this Duke team would beat last seasons Tar Hole team, because we beat them 2 out of 3 last season didn't we? I realize it's early and this team could possibly get worse, but I doubt it.
It's all fun and silly, but maybe a little over the top calling someone's opinion absurd for using that form of logic.

If only that’s how it worked. Any Duke fan can say we were better last year than UNC, but if they point to their trophy, we lose. UNC won the whole thing last season....that’s the trump card. It’s like a UK fan saying they were better than us in 2015. Well, guess what? You know the answer. If we had won it all in 1999, that Duke team would be considered among the all-time greats....but alas, it’s not even mentioned.
I stand by what I said. It’s absurd to say a team that has played all of three college games is better than any previous national champion. The only thing more absurd is having the conversation in the first place.
If Matt Jones is right, UK could be looking at our 1st class where we get 3 of the top 5 players of the class. All 3 of those players (Zion, Barrett, and Reddish) would be consensus top 5 players too. The closest thing we've had to that was Davis, Gilchrist, and Teague.
It would be crazy if that happened, and it's even more crazy to consider that we would still have a chance at Bagley (if he does play college basketball next year) and Bol Bol (Ik his recent comments didn't sound too positive for UK, but we're still recruiting him).

The above taken from RR in August. Guru Gary must be feeding Matt Jones his intel. Things sure changed for UK since then and the "Cal is the Man talk" has been dialed back quite a bit.
It would be crazy if that happened, and it's even more crazy to consider that we would still have a chance at Bagley (if he does play college basketball next year) and Bol Bol (Ik his recent comments didn't sound too positive for UK, but we're still recruiting him).

That post i remember some how being over there to see it and it was tattooed in my brain. I rarely venture over there but happened to be there in the dog days of summer and was like, wow...
At the time, all we could really know is that Cam was a lock for us. We had a pretty good feel on Marvin and we had a great relationship with RJ.
