At least it's not a woman like was rumored for awhile.... may sound chauvinist but I like sticking to the original books and story line . I am fine having a female type of James Bond but not anything really remotely close to the Bond character or name. Think they could do better for the next Bond than Aaron Taylor but I will still give it a chance with him.

I thought that people didn't like that a woman was the new 007 in the last movie, not that she was James Bond.

Pietro Maximoff cannot be Bond. Ughhhh...

Should be Idris Elba.

I hope this Aaron Taylor-Johnson thing is just a feint, a trial balloon gone bust...
I personally think a character from books, especially a well established series of books, should remain true to the author's hard work and cast someone that looks like the author's vision, but I'm a big book fan. "Good actor" or "popular actor" shouldn't be the only criteria.

It's one of the reasons I didn't like Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher and loathed Matthew McConaughey as Dirk Pitt (and I like both of them as actors).

I'm probably in the minority there....

I'm in the middle. I mean, one of the best alt casting choices ever was Zendaya as Mary Jane Parker....but, it can go the other way too.

Bond was never going to be a woman. A woman got the 007 designation in the last film, because Bond "retired" (or some such thing).

The key elements of Bond's persona are that he is male, caucasian, British, a loner, drinks too much, and is relatively capable of a number of skills from flying a plane to always being in shape to run down the bad guys while wearing a top notch suit. Plus he beds women.

He is an exxagerated version of Sir Ian Fleming.

And he always should be.

You're right. And while my post was hard over on "follow the authors vision" if I thought hard enough I could probably come up with some examples like yours where a "change" worked.

True. But Fleming also once said that his vision of Bond was Hoagy Carmichael.

Not quite. Ian Flemming actually worked for the British secret service and left when they left the top agent Sidney Reilly , out to dry during the Russian revolution after WW1 . Reilly was a genius at espionage and tried to stop the Bolshevic revolution , but was caught and later executed .

Flemming liked Reily but after what happened he left . He later created the character as James Bond . The rest has been history . PBS made a special miniseries , hosted by Vincent Price , Reilly ace of spies . Catch it if you can .

I've read all the Ian Fleming books and shorts, and Bond is mostly serious, deadly-when-necessary operator; very dry sense of humor. Which is why I think Idris Elba would be good in the role. He's a fantastic actor, great range, gravitas, physically can do the action and stunts. He was floated at the time of Craig's selection, along with Clive Owen and others. But to my changrin these candidates in my mind are becoming too old for Bond, who should be in his early-mid 30's or so, per the novels. But Pietro Maximoff?

Issue for me with Johnson (who is an impressive physical actor) is he's too boyish. My personal vote was for Tom Hardy, but he's probably too short for the role. Happy to give Johnson a chance, but Elba I think would have been inspired casting.

Yes, Johnson seems too boyish. Bond is not boyish.

I also agree with you that Tom Hardy would have been a good choice.

Without googling, I think Sam Neill (another fine dramatic actor, who could do the physical parts and stunts in his younger days) played Reilly, right?

Fleming was born in 1908; Reilly died in 1925. But, yes, Fleming did base Bond on Reilly.

“Reilly, Ace of Spies?” I saw that back in 1983, still remember it.

I was really impressed with Elba in Pacific Rim (which I thought was a fun movie), but Bond? I dunno. I agree with 'ro:

Elba is a great actor and has a great presence...but he's not Fleming's Bond.

Fleming is a character in the true story mini series Operation Mincemeat on Netflix
