Penn State a bit unique because of the sanction years, but overall outperforming their talent I think. Michigan too but seems like they should have more 5*’s. USC seriously underperforming.
It’s hard to change the momentum. I blame Franklin for the weak start in ‘09 that carried through over the next 10 years.
Yeah, USC, Florida State, Florida, Texas Auburn Tennessee, Ole Miss, and Miami have really underachieved.

Why overperforming? PSU plays 12 games per year and 9 or 10 of them are against teams with fewer 5* players.
What is it for 2014-2023… the Franklin years? That’s what matters. Others than O$U and OU, the top teams are all sunbelt teams.
Fixed it for you - that 1909 team had Larry Vorhis and Franklin just did not know how to coach him.
Same for a lot of other teams on this list with poorer results (Texas, USC, Florida, etc).
Interesting to me that Clemson is that far down. That had a very good run albeit 2 good qb's really helped them with Watson and Lawrence. Lawrence was a 5 star if I remember correctly.
That is how much an Elite Qb can push you into National Title contention.
Hoping the 5 * PSU QB reaches similar results in his collegiate career.
And being in a very winnable conference. If FSU and Miami are mid/down, it's an easy path to the CFP.
Good point. Statistics usually tell the real story. Maybe to figure out "overperforming" you need to look at how PSU has done against equal or better teams based on 5* talent.
Just for reference, when Posluszny committed to PSU, he was a 3-star.
How about this - overperforming compared to peer schools with more 5* recruits? It doesn't tell the whole story (wash outs, transfers, etc.), and PSU does have it's share of poor losses, but how well do you think PSU would have done if it had say, 20 5* players over that same time period (two per year)?
Those schools PSU has played with more 5* talent would be on a short list. It would pretty much be Ohio St, Michigan and a team we have played in a bowl game or out of conference early game. With 20 x 5* players on our roster, PSU would have probably beaten Ohio St a few more times over the last 5 years.
And the other five stars were defensive linemen. So you have a stud quarterback to lead the offense then you have multiple stud defensive lineman to lead the defense and then you have a weak conference.
If a program has 5-stars at QB, WR and DE more years than not, they’ll be in contention. That’s how important those positions are in today’s game.
LT would be next, but you can often develop guys or scheme there.
Keep in mind that USC was on probation for the early part of this data sample. That skews things for them and it had cascading effects with poor coaching hires and mixed results.
Program location and history will usually mean USC gets its share of 5-star kids. But poor depth and recruiting misses along the OL and DL sunk them.
Yeah, looked at Kalen King his preformance on the the field the first two years would have made him a 5 star instead of 4 star coming out of high school.
