Money and power (real or perceived) are the ultimate opioids going on here and have been infinitum. It actually ties into our biology and is an area that most of society wants to deny.
For attractive Southern girls, it's even more prevalent.

I dated a really, really pretty girl from Birmingham...for them your career and what fraternity you went to was paramount.

Despite the fact that I was a degreed engineer with a good paying job, as she was dumping my a$$ she said it was primarily because I wasn't "doing anything with my life"

Doctor, lawyer or bust I guess...

Southern girls are raised on the premise, "My Daddy is the best man I will ever know." and they date and choose mates accordingly. Tiny, whimsical bit of proof: When I started dating my now-wife, I grabbed my cloth hankie out of my back pocket to cover a sneeze. My then not-wife exclaimed, "My Daddy is the only other man I know who carries a hankie!" How many relationship points did that get me? IDK but I do know my wife (and other Southern women) compared their beaus to their fathers. In my situation, I was honored to pass the test. F-i-l was an awesome guy, God rest his soul.

Oh, it's not just southern girls, and it's not just young ladies either. Even here in the Northeast it's like that.

You don't want to be with someone who thinks you're a loser anyway.

Fwiw, my father-in-law was also a college professor. He taught Biology.
