Northwestern tried that sometime in the last decade and NLRB said no.

Yes, a timely reminder. If it goes through the NLRB again, we’d probably get a similar decision.

How far along in negotiations were the CFPA*with the Big Ten then? I mean, players couldn’t make money off their name ten years ago - things change.

* Also did not exist ten years ago.

This has been updated to say that they are looking to partner, not create a union at this time.

I sure hope Sean is spend as much time with his playbook and video as he is with his NIL collective and now this. If he wanted to be a businessman, he should have stepped away from football.

Does this mean that Franklin won’t be able to communicate with Clifford directly?

Franklin: Sean, let’s talk about the XYZ play to make sure we’re ready for Saturday.

Clifford: Coach, talk to my union rep.

And does this mean that players will only be able to run certain plays based on their union contract job description?

Clifford: Coach, I don’t do the running plays. I only throw.

You only pull the union rep for discipline. But I laughed.

If it keeps going down that road, the NCAA will step in and try to impose itself. It that point many football programs may break away and do their own thing.

So, he started his own business* and now wants to organize others on the team (in some way) to negotiate with the school/the conference/whoever for financial gain in some form. This, is getting very interesting. Makes me wonder if some are starting to question his future at the school.

STATE COLLEGE — Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford increased his involvement in the name, image and likeness space Sunday when he announced the creation of an agency, Limitless NIL, to help connect college athletes with opportunities to maximize their value.
Clifford made the announcement through an ESPN story and on social media.
“This class of student-athletes have the opportunity to set the stage for the next generation to come. When I created Limitless, I asked “what is the perfect agency for US?” Today, I am happy to announce I turned it into reality @LimitlessNIL,” Clifford tweeted.

And who would "some" be?

Good for Sean - he has completed all his degree requirements - I think he was a business major - and as such, he is making practical use of his degree and his experience as a student athlete.

Not sure why "some" would question his future at the school. That is just a ridiculous statement.

He takes the absolute minimum credit load, if any.

He already has two degrees and this is his CoVid year.

Plenty of time on his hands.

If he runs a business completely separate and distinct from the University, good for Sean. If his business involves the student athletes then there is the potential for conflict of business, depending on how, where, and to what end it is conducted. I tried to make my comment broad as clarity on what his intent is has already changed some (there's that word again!) from what's been said i.e. unionizing, not unionizing, however, therein should lie a clue to you.
Thanks for using Keanu Reeves as many say I look like him, so it makes me think that's me looking at you.

Why can’t he do both? I mean, he’s got to be close to retirement age by now. Has to plan for the future.

Review sharing would have been a solid option years ago before we got to the point of NIL, etc.

Just imagine the future possibilities, if negotiations get tense we may have Union Goons guarding the players locker room, and the Pa. National Guard on patrol outside the Lasch building escorting in the coaches. Also NLRB mediators formulating the game plans during cooling off periods.

If our OL is guarding the locker room, the players are in deep sh*t!

What is "crap" to you may not be "crap" to others. I'm not sure of this, but being a 6th year player Clifford may not have any classes. Could someone clarify?

I’m still trying to figure out what an independent association is.
