Since you’re using a portal addition as proof you need top talent, why are you referring to a freshman OAD as a need?
Because Collin’s is not a generational player and trying to compare him to JQ is nuts.And what if JQ and his father may decide to return

Portal is fine as long as you also land some studs. JQ was a great example of that.
Not treating role players like bona fide starters is also a great way to go. You keep making the mistake of treating the portal and elite freshmen recruits as mutually exclusive. Pope's job is to get the best players here, regardless of where they come from. It's really a simple equation.
Right. But you used JQ as an example of why Collins is a NEED. That seems odd considering there may be other players you could find in the portal that may be even better than Collins. Also, we just had the 2nd best portal class and I’m still hearing a lot of talk about recruiting. Wouldn’t you say the 2nd best portal class is good enough recruiting-wise?
Normally a talent like JQ will not be found in the portal. I hope we’re able to amend the JMI contract so we will be able to land some of the top prospects. At first I thought it was Pope’s fault for not being able to land them. However, now I think Pope will adapt his recruiting strategies going forward and do what’s necessary to land the top prospects.

I don’t see any big man in the SEC getting the best of JQ. Broad shoulders, quick jumper, strong as h—- and is quick on his feet for his size and Hungry.
If you watch some of his highlights for ASU there are good clips of him guarding Ike from Gonzaga. JQ was 17 years old and not outclassed. Dude is special.

It’s simple. He’s just saying we need more talent and Collins is a guy who would be a good fit also a good get for pope to prove he can pull in those elites. We got JQ because we took a chance on a guy who was coming off surgery that can have an unpredictable healing time. Need elite guys everywhere and some role players off the bench. Hes also assuming JMI is preventing better results on the recruit front. They need to prove they are noy restrictive for recruiting. It’s something fans need to see. You have an elite player in Collins. Maybe he plays 2 years with nil. He wants to play at Kentucky but perhaps JMI is restrictive in its practices? We need JMI to get out of the way. As a matter of fact UK athletics needs to have wholesale change. Uk bb needs to be separated out and there should be a dedicated AD for basketball. This is the only hope to save the program.
And he hasn’t played in 9 mos. This was him shaking off the rust.
And I’d be intellectually dishonest to not point out he was a Cal recruit lol. JQ and Somto together…whoa lol
Pope reeled him back in and it was a calculated risk. Could’ve easily gone sideways. If his rehab went two months longer it would’ve probably been too late and he wouldn’t have played or the team would’ve possibly been too far gone to make a difference.
The margins are thin when you’re coaching at this level. I hope we collectively have just a little bit of patience (and work out whatever the hell is going on with NIL contracts) because I think Pope can get there eventually. And I’m rooting for him to do it.
Would mean more to win a championship with one of our own like Pope than someone else. Just have to believe he can get us there and be patient and hope he is learning as quickly as possible.
None of that would mean Collins is a “need.” If you can find someone else in the portal instead, then it’s fine. If we can get Collins —- great! If we don’t, there will be more options. If you’re presupposing JMI issues, it actually nullifies the entire argument to begin with — that’s out of Pope’s control. All I hear about is recruiting, especially from guys like you.
