Fenwick High School Gets a Football Field to Call Home
New 10-year partnership agreement with Triton College gives Fenwick its long-sought-after home field advantage
The Fenwick High School Football Program has enjoyed many successes over the years. But without a football field of its own, the team has been something of a rolling stone. Now, through a partnership agreement with Triton College, Fenwick High School will have a real home field advantage for the first time since opening in 1929.
The agreement between the two educational institutions provides Fenwick use of the Triton College Multi-Purpose Field for all levels of football game play now through May 2026. Additionally, Fenwick can use the field for other athletic activities based on availability.
The field, a part of Triton’s recently renovated Athletic Complex, is located at 2000 5th Avenue in River Grove. During games, the field will feel like home to fans of the Fenwick Friars. In the way that the Fenwick name and shield grace the school’s other athletic fields at Priory Park in River Forest, Fenwick can adorn the field with signage. The Friars will also have access to the upgraded complex’s bathrooms, locker rooms, use of the scoreboard, field lighting and PA systems, as well as being able to offer concessions during games.
“Since the beginning of our football program, we’ve had to compete with other high schools for a place to play and practice,” says Fenwick Athletic Director Scott Thies. “Now all of our home games will be played at one place, which makes scheduling easier not only for our athletic department, but that of other schools in our conference, and for our parents and fans. We can instead put our competitive focus where it belongs—on the field and in the game.”
“We are grateful to all the places we have called home over the years,” says Fenwick Head Football Coach Gene Nudo. “Our football program will now have one place to call home, a place that our students and fans will know where we’ll be playing. A state of the art facility where this season, we’ll play [all] six home games on Friday nights against three defending state champions.”
Thies adds that being able to play home games on Friday nights will set the stage for great crowds and new traditions.
Landlocked between Washington Boulevard and Madison Street, and East and Scoville avenues, Fenwick has faced difficulties meeting the needs of a growing student body and athletic programs. It has 30 different athletic programs, which use the limited space of two gymnasiums located on the Fenwick campus, and the Priory fields.
Coming off of a remarkable year of team and individual success, Fenwick President Fr. Richard Peddicord, O.P. sees this partnership as another win for the 87-year-old Dominican Catholic college preparatory high school. “Having a home field will enhance and enrich the student experience, which is precisely what the administration, teachers, coaches and staff at Fenwick are committed to doing,” Fr. Peddicord says.
The first home game of the 2016 Fenwick Football season will be on Friday, August 26 against Wendell Phillips Academy High School.
